Just two years ago, at the I\/O 2017 conference, Google first announced support for Kotlin in its IDE \u2014 Android Studio. This came as a surprise, considering that Java had long been the preferred language for developing Android applications. Few announcements at that conference received more applause. Over the past two years, Kotlin's popularity has only increased. According to Google, more than 50% of professional Android developers use this language for their app development, and in the latest Stack Overflow developer survey, it ranks as the fourth most popular programming language in the world.<\/p>\n

And it seems that Google has now found reason to increase its support for Kotlin. \u201cWe are announcing that the next big step we are taking is that Kotlin will be our primary focus,\u201d said Chet Haase, an engineer on the Android UI Toolkit development team at Google.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand that not everyone is using Kotlin yet, but we believe you should give it a try,\u201d Haase continues. \u201cYou may have valid reasons to still use programming languages like C++ and Java, and that\u2019s perfectly fine. They are not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Kotlin was developed by JetBrains, a company founded by our countrymen, with offices in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Novosibirsk. Therefore, Kotlin can largely be considered a domestic development that has achieved global recognition.
