Ten years ago, on May 11, 2009, Mikhail Zaripov (MikhailZ) announced the first modular build based on Mandriva repositories, which became its first release. MagOS<\/a><\/noindex>. MagOS \u2014 a pre-configured Linux distribution for Russian-speaking users, combining a modular architecture (like Slax) with the repositories of a 'donor' distribution. The first donor was the Mandriva project, and now Rosa (fresh and red) repositories are used. The 'modularity' makes MagOS nearly indestructible and well-suited for experimentation since you can always revert to the initial or saved state. The donor repositories make it universal, as everything available in Rosa is also accessible. <\/p>\n

MagOS supports booting from Flash and saves work results either in a directory or a file. Because of this, many consider MagOS a 'Flash' distribution, but this is not entirely accurate as it is not limited to Flash and can boot from disks, img, iso, vdi, qcow2, vmdk, or over a network. This is managed by the MagOS team \u2014 UIRD<\/a><\/noindex>, an initial RAM disk for booting Linux with a 'layered' rootfs (aufs, overlayfs). The letter 'U' in the acronym stands for 'unified', meaning UIRD is not tied to MagOS and can be used for any similar projects.<\/p>\n

Unlike other well-known modular distributions, MagOS has an update system; it is rebuilt monthly with new packages from the Rosa repositories and changes made by the MagOS team, after which the core modules and UIRD are automatically distributed to users. In other words, two builds are released monthly (32-bit \u2014 red and 64-bit \u2014 fresh).
