Today I want to talk about what \"digital\" means. Digital transformation, digital assets, digital products... These words are everywhere today. In Russia, national programs are being launched, and even ministries are being renamed, but when reading articles and reports, you frequently encounter vague phrases and unclear definitions. Recently, I attended a \"high-level\" meeting where representatives from a respected institution training specialists in information technology answered the question \"What is the difference between informatization and digitalization?\" by saying that \"they are the same thing \u2014 digitalization is just a trendy term.\"<\/p>\n

I think it's time to clarify.<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

If you try to find clear definitions somewhere, they don't exist. Usually, people refer to technologies (like where big data, artificial intelligence, and so on are implemented \u2014 that's digital transformation). Sometimes, they focus on human participation (like if robots replace people, then that's digitalization). <\/p>\n

I have a different suggestion. I propose to find a criterion that helps distinguish the \"digital\" from the \"ordinary.\" By finding this criterion, we will arrive at a simple and clear definition.<\/p>\n

To avoid becoming obsolete, this criterion should not appeal to technologies (which sprout up like mushrooms after rain) or to human participation in the technological process (that story has already been \"worked out\" by the technological revolution).<\/p>\n

Let's pay attention to the business model and the product. By product, I mean something (a good or service) that carries value (for example, a cake, a car, or a haircut), and by business model, I mean a set of processes aimed at producing value and delivering it to the consumer.<\/p>\n

Historically, a product was \"ordinary\" (if you prefer \u2014 you can say \"analog,\" but to me, saying \"a loaf of analog bread\" sounds pretentious). In the world, there have been, are, and will be many ordinary goods and services. What unites all of them is the fact that producing each copy of such a product requires resources (as Matroskin the cat said, to sell something unnecessary, you need to buy something unnecessary). To make a loaf of bread, you need flour and water; to make a car, you need a lot of everything; to give someone a haircut, you need to spend time. <\/p>\n

Every time, for each copy.<\/p>\n

There are products where the cost of producing each new copy is zero (or approaches zero). For instance, you recorded a song, took a photo, developed an app for iPhone or Android, and that's it\u2026 You sell them over and over, and, first of all, you never run out of them, and secondly, each new copy costs you nothing.<\/p>\n

The idea is not new. Throughout history, there have been many examples of products where producing each copy cost nothing. For example, selling plots on the moon or, more closely related, shares in a financial pyramid (such as MMM tickets). Usually, it was something illegal (and I\u2019m not even referring to the criminal code but to the law of conservation of 'energy-matter-life-universe-and-all-that', as voiced by the cat Matroskin).<\/p>\n

However, with the development of technology (the advent of computers, computer networks, and everything derived from them \u2014 cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, etc.), a unique opportunity arose to copy products endlessly and for free. Some took this literally and simply photocopied money (but that is also illegal), whereas selling digitized music compositions on iTunes, digital photographs in stock photo banks, or apps in Google Play or the App Store \u2014 all of this is legal and quite profitable since, as you remember, each new copy brings in money and costs nothing. This is a digital product.<\/p>\n

A digital asset is something that allows the production of a product (replicating items or providing a service), with the cost of producing each subsequent copy approaching zero (for example, your online store through which you sell something or a database of atomic reactor sensors that allows forecasting and conducting experiments).<\/p>\n

Digital transformation is the shift from producing physical products to producing digital products, as well as (and\/or) the transition to business models that leverage digital assets.<\/p>\n

As you can see, it's simple. This is such a transformation.
