Modern data centers are reliable, but any equipment can fail from time to time. In this brief note, we have gathered the most significant incidents of 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\"Major<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

The impact of digital technologies on the economy is growing, with increasing volumes of processed information, new facilities being built, and everything functions well as long as everything works. Unfortunately, the impact of data center failures on the economy has also escalated since businesses began hosting critical IT infrastructure within them \u2014 this is the inevitable consequence of digitization. We publish a small selection of the most notable disasters that occurred in various countries last year.<\/p>\n

The USA<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

This country is a recognized leader in data center construction. The USA has the highest number of large commercial and corporate data processing centers<\/a>, serving global services, making the consequences of incidents within them the most significant. In early March, due to a powerful cyclone, four facilities of the Equinix operator experienced power supply system failures. The spaces were used for Amazon Web Services (AWS) equipment, and the accident led to the unavailability of many popular services: GitHub, MongoDB, NewVoiceMedia, Slack, Zillow, Atlassian, Twilio, and Capital One, as well as the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant were affected. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In September, weather anomalies struck Microsoft data centers located in Texas, where a storm disrupted the power supply system for an entire region, and in a data center switched to diesel generator power, the cooling unexpectedly shut down. It took several days to address the aftermath, and although this failure did not become critical thanks to load balancing, some performance slowdown of Microsoft\u2019s cloud services was noticed by users worldwide.<\/p>\n

Russia<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The most serious incident occurred on August 20 at one of Rostelecom's data centers. Due to this, the servers of the Unified State Register of Real Estate were down for 66 hours, necessitating their transfer to a backup site. Rostelecom could only restore processing of incoming applications through all channels by September 3 \u2014 the government organization is attempting to claim a substantial amount from Rostelecom for violating the service level agreement. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On February 16, due to issues in the Lenenergo networks, the backup power supply system was activated at the Xelnet data center (Saint Petersburg). The brief interruption of the power sinusoid caused disruptions in many services: notably, the large cloud provider 1cloud was affected, but the most noticeable issue for the Russian internet audience was the inability to access the social network \"VKontakte\". Interestingly, it took about 12 hours to fully eliminate the consequences of the short power outage.<\/p>\n

European Union<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

In the EU, several serious incidents were recorded in 2018. In March, a failure occurred at the data center of the airline KLM: the power supply was cut off for 10 minutes, and the capacity of the diesel generator systems was insufficient for operating the equipment. Part of servers<\/a> the services shut down, and the airline had to cancel or reschedule several dozen flights. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This was not the only incident related to air travel \u2013 in April, a power supply failure occurred at the Eurocontrol data center. This organization manages air traffic in the European Union, and while specialists worked for 5 hours to eliminate the aftermath of the accident, passengers once again had to endure delays and rescheduled flights. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Very serious problems arise from accidents in the data centers serving the financial sector. The cost of transaction disruptions is usually high here, and the reliability level of the facilities is accordingly high, yet incidents still occur. On April 18, the Nordic NASDAQ stock exchange (Helsinki, Finland) was unable to conduct trading across Northern Europe for the whole day due to an unauthorized activation of the gas fire extinguishing system in the commercial data center DigiPlex, which was emergency shut down. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On June 7, disruptions at the data center caused the London Stock Exchange (LSE) to delay the start of trading by an hour. Additionally, in June, due to a failure in a data center, services of the international payment system VISA were disrupted for an entire day across Europe, although the details of the incident were never disclosed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Japan<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2018, a fire broke out at the underground levels of a data center under construction in the suburbs of Tokyo, resulting in the deaths of 5 workers and injuring at least 50. The fire damaged approximately 5000 square meters of the facility. Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by human error: insulation ignited due to improper handling of acetylene torches.<\/p>\n

Causes of Failures<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The list of incidents provided is far from complete; clients of banks and telecom operators suffer due to data center outages, cloud service providers go offline, and even emergency services are disrupted. A minor service interruption can lead to significant losses; according to the Uptime Institute, the majority of outages (39%) are related to power supply systems. Human error ranks second (24%), and cooling systems come in third (15%). Natural phenomena account for only 12% of data center failures, and only 10% of these occur for reasons other than those listed. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Despite strict standards for reliability and safety, no facility is immune to incidents. Most occur due to power supply failures or personnel errors. Data center and server room owners should first focus on these two factors, while clients must understand that even market leaders cannot guarantee absolute reliability. If equipment or cloud services support business-critical processes, consideration should be given to a backup site.<\/p>\n
