AMD's CEO Lisa Su stated at the annual shareholder meeting that advanced packaging solutions like the use of \"chiplets\" will be one of the keys to the company's success in the future. The Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster appeared in another video in the series. Mark stated that over the past fifty years of AMD's existence, the industry has frequently faced barriers that initially seemed insurmountable, but engineers have always found solutions. It is the challenges that drive innovation and the creation of problem-solving techniques. At the same time, as the CTO notes, the empirical rule known as \"Moore's Law\" no longer holds true simply due to the advancement of semiconductors, and it is no longer possible to increase the performance of computing equipment just through this factor.<\/p>\n

\"Everyone in this industry is constrained by the same laws of physics,\" explains Mark Papermaster. Every new step in lithographic technology becomes more expensive, takes longer to implement, and no longer provides the same performance gains in transistors. AMD has decided to use innovative packaging solutions to maintain the pace of processor performance growth. Alongside the development of the Zen processor architecture, the high-speed Infinity Fabric interface has been developed over several years, leading the company to an architectural approach referred to as \"chiplet\" (from English chiplet \u2013 a small silicon die). Papermaster confidently stated that AMD will be the first in the industry to implement \"chiplets.\"<\/p>\n

This ambitious statement can be countered with arguments. In any case, several crystals on one substrate were encountered at Intel as early as 2006 when it began producing 65-nm Pentium D processors of the Presler family. Later, in 2010, within the Clarkdale family, Intel was combining heterogeneous crystals on one substrate that were manufactured using 32-nm and 45-nm technology processes, respectively. Finally, the recent collaboration between Intel and AMD on the Kaby Lake-G processors was characterized by the appearance of an AMD discrete graphics solution alongside the 'native' Intel crystal on the same substrate. In terms of 'design heterogeneity,' such a hybrid had little competition.<\/p>\n

It cannot be said that NVIDIA neglects this idea, although its founder and longstanding leader tries to emphasize at every opportunity how complex and large monolithic chips are. First of all, NVIDIA's research division has a scientific paper comparing monolithic and multi-chip layouts, and the advantage has been acknowledged for the latter. Secondly, at the August conference, Hot Chips<\/a><\/noindex> NVIDIA, with the support of its partners, will present a prototype neural network accelerator featuring a multi-chip layout.<\/p>\n

\"AMD:<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that AMD does not dismiss the idea of its further progress in mastering advanced technology processes, and before discussing its methods of working with students, it demonstrated a mock-up of an imagined 2-nm graphics processor. This demonstration was preceded by a mention of the '30th generation Ryzen processor.' Today's youth will be involved in developing future products, so special attention is given to staffing efforts in this direction within the company.<\/p>\n
