Unlike regular lessons, the topic wasn't about language structure or problem-solving. The student shared his concerns about future employment. The student was quite bright\u2014one of those who attends courses, completes the program faster than everyone else, and comes up with original solutions, yet constantly underestimates himself. In my opinion, such doubts arise only from a lack of information. I tried to fill this gap spontaneously during the session.<\/p>\n<p>The questions were roughly as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every year, numerous students graduate from universities and all of them go out to look for jobs. That's a lot of people. Surely they'll hire the best, and there won't be a place for me.<\/li>\n<li>What if I mess up and get fired right away?<\/li>\n<li>What if, during the work process, they realize that I\u2019m incompetent and kick me out?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThis student wasn't the first person I've answered such questions for. They arise for many, and I often have to share guidance without any preparation. This time, I decided to write down my monologue in a notebook. I thought I'd come up with a couple of paragraphs, but it turned into an entire article.<br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\nThe article presents my perspective based on my experience. However, our world is very diverse, and amazing things happen. If you disagree with something or your experience differs in any way, please leave a comment.<\/p>\n<p>The article was written by a developer for developers. However, if you plan to engage in testing, administration, or something else in IT, you might find some of the advice useful as well.<\/p>\n<h3>They won't hire you at all.<\/h3>\n<p>\nWhen you imagine that every year, countless universities graduate hundreds of students, it becomes unsettling. How can you compete with such a huge crowd?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, not all graduates have sufficient technical training. Try asking some student you know from university: how do people in their group get permission to take exams in subjects like \"databases\" or \"fundamentals of algorithms and programming\"? In a group of 30 people, at best there will be 3-5 \"advanced\" students who did everything themselves. The others just copy from them, cram answers to questions, and pass.<\/p>\n<p>It was the same when I was studying. However, my experience might not be representative. So I asked several different students this question. The response was approximately the same. The respondents were from various universities and colleges. I will leave discussions about the reasons outside the scope of this article. I won\u2019t have enough resources for a full study, so I will draw conclusions from the available facts. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among hundreds of graduates, only a couple of dozen are of interest to employers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Few graduates can genuinely compete with a capable student who is well-prepared. However, even if you studied diligently, after the first interview, you will most likely not be hired. After the second one, probably not either. Things can go well, but it\u2019s better to prepare not for an assault but for a siege. A failed attempt to get a job is just an opportunity to reflect on mistakes and try again. I won\u2019t discuss interview preparation. There's already a lot written about this online. I will only say that there are nuances in passing interviews that your educational program likely didn\u2019t allocate time to explain. Look for this information on your own, it may reduce the number of attempts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a change.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Einstein<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> To prevent interview attempts from turning into madness, you need to improve after each new attempt. Remember or write down the questions you were asked during the interview. When you get home, review this list and check yourself using the internet. This way, you'll understand where you went wrong and where the interviewer did. That happens too. Repeat or study the topics where you answered poorly and try again.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, there is a distinct seasonality in the labor market. Smart companies plan hiring around graduation dates. In spring, there are more job openings for newcomers than at other times. However, competition is also higher during this period.<\/p>\n<h4>Fired - bluntly<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When hiring someone without experience, there are corresponding expectations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> The expectations for a newcomer at work are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowledge of the general technical foundation<\/li>\n<li>Learning the specifics of the company's subject area<\/li>\n<li>Mastering the tools and practices used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nIn some organizations, training courses are organized for newcomers on the technologies, tools, and local practices used. For example, the rules of good manners when using corporate email, the process of document modification in the wiki, and local nuances of working with VCS and the bug tracker.<\/p>\n<p>There are also introductory technical courses, but their usefulness is questionable. If it has come to employment, it means the employers have confirmed that you have a sufficient level of knowledge. It's best to go through such courses diligently, treating them as a small formality. There may actually be something useful in them.<\/p>\n<p>When you start working, remember that a newcomer will definitely not be tasked with solving an urgent, complex, and at the same time important task. Most likely, there will only be one of these properties. Either simple but urgent: fixing layout, forwarding some files, reproducing a problem. Or complex but without any hope of completion \u2014 just to ensure that the newcomer encounters as many pitfalls as possible. Or important but experimental. For example, a project that everyone has long wanted but cannot find the time to implement.<\/p>\n<p>Tasks for mastering the tools will be 'complex' and artificial. Most likely, this will be a simplified version of the main system. In such tasks, the same tech stack and the same terms from the subject area as in the entire project will be used. However, the results will not be delivered to the end user. This can be demotivating, but it is better to resist that sentiment. The artificial task should be done diligently, as if the fate of the project depends on it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The result of solving your first task will shape your colleagues' first impression of you, especially those who weren\u2019t at the interview.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Another way to approach mastering the tools is to \"launch a project on a local machine\/test environment.\" Sometimes this process is described in documentation. However, those documents are often outdated and occasionally inaccurate. You can provide real value to the project by writing new documentation that addresses the issues that have arisen. Surely, at the university, you had to write course projects for reports in various subjects. This process is quite similar. The document should reflect the actions needed to launch the project.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the steps to launch a product in a test environment are approximately as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>clone the repository, switch to a specific branch or tag<\/li>\n<li>create a configuration file<\/li>\n<li>prepare the database structure<\/li>\n<li>populate it with test data<\/li>\n<li>build or compile the project,<\/li>\n<li>run a series of console scripts in a specific sequence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During the local system startup process, unforeseen issues will inevitably arise.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Solutions to the problems found need to be added to the deployment documentation. This way, next time you follow the instructions, these problems won't occur again. While filling out configuration files and calling scripts, you need to pay attention to which value is used where and what it needs to match with. For example, if the project is built with a CI system and then launched with a script, it's important to understand where to write the branch name or commit number. Sometimes, the script implies the passing of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/prohoster.info\/en\/lir\/ipv4\/\"   title=\"an IP address\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"627\">an IP address<\/a> or the DNS name of the database, its username, and password. In this case, you need to know exactly which address to use for the test environment, what usernames are available there, and what passwords need to be specified for them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some tasks may seem simple for experienced developers but can pose challenges for interns. This is a normal occurrence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Developers face technical problems daily. Experienced staff has solved many issues before, while newcomers still have to deal with them. The best strategy is to document all encountered errors in the 'problem-solving for ${task_name}' document. For each problem, you need to formulate a hypothesis about the cause, find solutions online, and try them one by one. The outcome of each attempt should also be documented.<\/p>\n<p>Documenting your findings in a formal document will allow you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>offload minor details from your mind, such as configuration parameters, DNS\/IP addresses, console commands, and SQL queries.<\/li>\n<li>recall 'what I was doing yesterday' when a task stretches over several days.<\/li>\n<li>not go around in circles. You can always read what you did earlier and realize that you have returned to the original problem.<\/li>\n<li>clearly answer the question: 'what did you do today?' even if you don't have a final solution yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You need to be able to communicate the status of your tasks to your colleagues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nFrom time to time, colleagues will want to know about your progress and share theirs. This requires setting aside a little time each day or week.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not track encountered and resolved issues, your progress will be described as: 'I tried to complete the task, but I am struggling. I'm currently looking for a solution.' This type of narrative does not clarify whether the intern did anything or just sat reading Habr. Do they need help? Has the situation changed since yesterday?<\/p>\n<p>If you maintain a document on solution searches, you can say, 'I am trying to complete this task. I encountered these errors. I resolved some this way. I haven't managed this one yet. Here are some hypotheses and potential solutions I'm checking now.'<\/p>\n<p>If a task can be measured in any way, the status should reflect numbers. For example, for the task 'write unit tests for the module', you could say, 'I plan to create 20 tests; I have currently written 10.'<\/p>\n<p>The more details you provide, the better your colleagues will understand what you've been doing. This will create a positive impression of you and help them determine if you need assistance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Don't hesitate to ask for help.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Previously, I mentioned that when a problem arises, you need to formulate a hypothesis about its causes and possible solutions. However, there are times when the hypotheses do not hold, and self-discovered solutions do not work. In such cases, it is better to seek help. To avoid overburdening your colleagues, you should spend some time trying to solve every problem on your own. If you haven't found a solution after a couple of hours, it's time to seek advice from more experienced peers.<\/p>\n<p>It's best to start with the question: \u201cHas anyone encountered this problem before?\u201d along with a brief description of the issue. It's advisable to attach part of the error message or a screenshot. The first time, it's better to send this message in a general work chat. This way, you won't disrupt those who are truly busy. Available colleagues will see your message and be able to help.<\/p>\n<p>If no one offers assistance after posting in the group chat, try to catch an experienced colleague during a break: lunch, a trip for tea\/coffee, a game of tennis, or a smoke break. If that doesn't work out, report your difficulties during a meeting or stand-up.<\/p>\n<p>For known issues, this may be where it ends. However, if the problem is new, an investigation will begin, where you will need to act according to the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>The 'important' tasks for newcomers that are needed by the end user will be dull and small. For example, 'add an additional column to the report' or 'correct a typo in the print form' or 'implement a method in the model to load customer attributes from the database.' The purpose of such tasks is for the newcomer to familiarize themselves with the subject area and integrate into daily work.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It's important not only to technically solve the task but also to expand knowledge of the subject area.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> In the task description, chats, and conversations, you will encounter terms. They may appear as familiar nouns. However, within the context of the information system, they hold a special, more precise meaning. It is best to document the meanings of these terms in a special document\u2014a glossary of terms. When adding to the glossary, simply write your understanding of the word, and for the actual definition, it\u2019s better to consult an analyst. If one is not available, then turn to the project veterans. Maintaining a glossary of terms is one of the simplest ways to get acquainted with the project\u2019s subject area.<\/p>\n<p>Once you find common ground with your colleagues, they will stop viewing you as a novice intern and see you as an equal professional.<\/p>\n<p>There are specific tasks, such as 'writing unit tests for a module.' It\u2019s unlikely to get stuck on finding solutions for this task for long. Nevertheless, it is quite serious and is given not only for the intern's training. The written tests enhance the project's stability by reducing bugs in the application and decreasing the time spent on manual testing. In an ideal world, unit tests are written alongside development, but reality is often different. Sometimes the module developer holds everything in their head and sees no need to write tests. 'It's all obvious\u2014what needs testing here?' Occasionally, modules are developed under time pressure, leaving no time for unit tests. Therefore, in the real world, there might be no unit tests. That\u2019s why the task of writing unit tests is assigned to a newcomer. This way, the intern can adapt to the project more quickly while the project saves the time of higher-paid specialists.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes interns and newcomers are assigned the role of full-fledged testers. Usually, before this, they need to set up the product locally and read the requirements. From the new employee, the following results are expected:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>questions like 'if we do it this way, it will turn out like this. This is not in the requirements. How should it be?'<\/li>\n<li>tasks in the bug tracker 'the requirements say it\u2019s like this, but in reality, it\u2019s different.'<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nTesting is an excessively broad area of activity for this article. If you\u2019ve been assigned such a task, look online for the best way to perform it.<\/p>\n<h4>If you mess up \u2014 you will be fired.<\/h4>\n<p>\nIn a normal organization, if an inexperienced employee suddenly gains access to something critical and messes it up, the blame will fall on whoever allowed that to happen. This is because, by default, a novice does not have access to critical infrastructure. With proper management, not all the blame will be placed on an inexperienced intern.<\/p>\n<p>If something does happen, they will not fire someone over a single incident. People learn from their mistakes. An intern who made a mistake gained valuable experience and is significantly different from other interns. If the one who made the mistake is fired, another will come in and make the same mistake.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The main thing is to learn from mistakes and not repeat them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHowever, if a person does not learn from their mistakes, they will be let go. The world is diverse; in some shady organizations, they might throw you out of the window for a first mistake. But it\u2019s better to avoid such companies, which requires doing some research or finding out more during the interview.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is best to avoid incidents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Even if you are not personally fired for a mistake, such an incident can cause unwanted problems for your team and the project as a whole. Therefore, be particularly careful with operations that delete or create tables in the database, files, service instances, and documents in the project's knowledge base. If you encounter the address of a new connection, check with at least two different people about what can be done there. Verify your permissions in the environments not through trial and error, but with the appropriate commands. For example, check file deletion permissions with the `ls` command, permission to work with tables in MySQL using the command `SHOW GRANTS FOR 'user'@'host';` and similar commands. In almost any tool, you will have this capability.<\/p>\n<p>When editing files, make sure to save a copy of the original, just in case.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Several barriers are built between the intern and the end consumer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> If you could immediately deliver your product to the consumer, you could skip working for someone else and venture into 'freelancing.' But as long as you don\u2019t have that opportunity (and responsibility), you need to go through several stages of control in the project.<br \/>\nThe first step is a mentor review. They assess the novice's solution from a technical standpoint. If a mentor hasn't been assigned, it\u2019s necessary to find one. To do this, choose someone from the project veterans and during a break, ask them to take a look at the solution: is the task solved correctly? If they start to review and respond, a mentor has been found. If ignored, it's worth asking someone else.<\/p>\n<p>The next stage is Quality Assurance. In Russian, this means testers. In Soviet terms, it\u2019s normal control and quality control. They need to ensure that the intern's work meets the assigned task. They will rarely delve into the code. Most often, testers will check the assembled project that the developer saves in the version control system.<\/p>\n<p>The third stage is the release manager. There might not be a separate person for this task, but someone still fulfills this role. They check that the testers have confirmed that the project can be released. After that, they carry out actions to deliver the product to the end users.<br \/>\nIn small organizations, these barriers may be absent for various reasons. However, they will not assign a novice to change anything important, since that risk is undesirable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You need to get into the action first, and then see how it goes.<br \/>\nNapoleon Bonaparte<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> I hope this article helps you overcome your doubts and send your first resume. Of course, you should prepare beforehand. But don\u2019t take too long. You\u2019ve likely already spent several years in university or college. How much longer can you wait? After all, it's better to hear a 'no' from a specialist once and work on your mistakes than to say 'no' to yourself every day and halt your professional growth.<\/p>\n<p>After getting hired, you need to focus on growing from an intern to a full-fledged team member.
