The release is built using the base package set from the in-development SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1 distribution, on top of which newer versions of user applications from the repository are provided. <noindex>openSUSE Tumbleweed</noindex>. For downloading <noindex>is available</noindex> a universal DVD assembly, sized at 3.8 GB, a minimal image for installation with package loading over the network (125 MB) and <noindex>Live images</noindex> with KDE and GNOME (900 MB).

<noindex>Key</noindex> <noindex>innovations</noindex>:

The distribution components have been updated. As with SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1, the base Linux kernel is still supplied, based on version 4.12, from which some changes have been ported from kernel 4.19 since the last release of openSUSE. In particular, new graphics drivers have been transferred and support for AMD Vega chips has been added. New drivers for wireless chips, sound cards, and MMC storage devices have been added. The default configuration when building the kernel <noindex>enabled</noindex> is the CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY option, which positively affects the responsiveness of the GNOME desktop.

In addition to GCC 7, packages with GCC 8 compiler sets have been added;

For network configuration on PCs, the
Network Manager is used by default, which was previously offered only for laptops. In server builds, Wicked continues to be used by default. Some configuration files, such as /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/yp.conf, are now created in the /run directory and managed through netconfig, while a symbolic link is set in /etc;

In YaST, system service management components have been revamped to utilize various advanced capabilities of systemd. A new user interface for configuring Firewalld has been added, which is available in text mode and supports AutoYaST. In the yast2-configuration-management module, improved support for the Salt configuration management system has been introduced, along with the ability to manage SSH keys for individual users.

In YaST and AutoYaST, the interface for managing disk partitions has been upgraded, which now supports automatic formatting of empty disks that do not contain any partitions, as well as the ability to create software RAID on entire disks or specific partitions. Improvements have been made to support 4K (HiDPI) displays, for which the correct user interface scaling settings are now automatically applied, including for the installer interface.

The installer provides an option to choose between the Wicked and NetworkManager network configurations. A passwordless SSH setup mode has been added, allowing you to specify an SSH key for root during installation;

As in the previous release, openSUSE offers user environments KDE Plasma 5.12 and GNOME 3.26. The KDE Applications set has been updated to version 18.12.3. Environments like MATE, Xfce, LXQt, Enlightenment, and Cinnamon are also available for installation. Users of the SLE 15 distribution can install community-supported KDE packages from PackageHub;

A lightweight toolkit for managing isolated containers has been integrated, using a utility for building containers <noindex>Buildah</noindex> and runtime from the project <noindex>Podman</noindex>. A container management toolkit <noindex>Singularity</noindex>, optimized for isolated execution of individual applications, is also available;

The installation of the distribution on ARM64-based Raspberry Pi boards has been simplified. You can now use standard builds for installation on Raspberry Pi — the installer of the usual installation image for ARM detects the presence of the board and offers a default settings set, including creating a separate partition for firmware.

A build with the option '-fstack-clash-protection' has been provided, where the compiler inserts probe checks during each static or dynamic stack allocation, allowing the detection of stack overflow instances and blocking attack methods based on it. <noindex>stack and heap intersection</noindex>, related to the exploitation of execution flow through stack guard pages;
