My name is Yulia, and I am a tester. Last year, I told you about <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habr.com\/ru\/company\/avito\/blog\/351736\/\">BugCleaning<\/a><\/noindex> \u2014 an event held at our company to clean up the bug backlog. This is quite a viable option to significantly reduce it (in different teams by 10 to 50%) in just one day. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Today, I want to tell you about our spring format of BugCleaning \u2014 BUgHunting (BUH). This time we didn't fix old bugs, but searched for new ones and proposed ideas for features. Below are many details about organizing such events, our results, and participant feedback. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/a7d06008f8cc727dd054de76adf59f63.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p>After thinking through and writing down the regulations, we sent out an invitation to all channels in our corporate Slack, with no restrictions:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habrastorage.org\/webt\/ig\/qf\/s1\/igqfs1pz7pcixrmf10yedqlk7vy.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/9953ecc47d9f6b0d2e5c4586367790f3.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As a result, about 30 people signed up \u2014 both developers and non-technical specialists. We allocated an entire workday for the event, booked a large meeting room, and organized lunches from the office cafeteria.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"zachem\">Why?<\/h1>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It might seem that each team tests its own functionality. Users report bugs to us. Why even hold such an event? <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We had several goals.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>To introduce the guys to adjacent projects\/products more closely<\/strong>.<br \/>\nCurrently, everyone in our company works in separate teams \u2014 units. These are project groups that develop their part of the functionality and are not always fully aware of what is happening in other projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To simply introduce colleagues to each other<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe have almost 800 employees in the Moscow office, and not all colleagues know each other in person. <\/li>\n<li><strong>To enhance developers' bug-finding skills in their products<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe are currently promoting Agile Testing and enhancing the skills of the guys in this area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To engage non-technical specialists in testing<\/strong>.<br \/>\nApart from the technical department, we have many colleagues from other specialties who would like to learn more about testing, about how to report bugs correctly so that we receive fewer messages in the format of 'Aaaa... nothing works'. <\/li>\n<li><strong> And, of course, to find tricky and non-obvious bugs<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe wanted to help teams test new features and provide them with an opportunity to look at the implemented functionality from a different angle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"realizaciya\">Implementation<\/h1>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Our day consisted of several blocks:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>briefing; <\/li>\n<li>a brief lecture on testing, where we covered only the main points (goals and principles of testing, etc.);<\/li>\n<li>a section on the 'rules of good conduct' for reporting bugs (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habr.com\/ru\/company\/docsvision\/blog\/264163\/\">here<\/a><\/noindex> well-described principles);<\/li>\n<li>four testing sessions on projects with high-level described scenarios; before each session, there was a brief introductory lecture on the project and team allocation; <\/li>\n<li>a short survey about the event; <\/li>\n<li>summarizing the results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>(We also didn\u2019t forget about breaks between sessions and lunch).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"osnovnye-pravila\">Main Rules<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Registration for the events is individual<\/strong>, which solves the problem of the entire team skipping if one person decides not to attend.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Each session participants change teams<\/strong>. This allows participants to leave and return at any time and also meet more people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commands<\/strong> two people are formed before each session <strong>randomly<\/strong>, making it more dynamic and faster.<\/li>\n<li>Points are awarded for reported bugs <strong>(from 3 to 10) depending on the severity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Points are not awarded for duplicates.<\/li>\n<li>Bugs must be reported by a team member according to all internal standards.<\/li>\n<li>Feature requests are reported in a separate task and participate in a separate nomination.<\/li>\n<li>The audit team monitors compliance with all rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2576e7f87472375a7c83f69d35ba24a9.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"drugie-detali\">Other details<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initially, we wanted to create an 'advanced' testing event, but since a lot of people from non-product teams (SMM, lawyers, PR) signed up, we had to simplify the content significantly and remove complex\/profile cases. <\/li>\n<li>Due to the units working in Jira on different projects with their workflows, we specifically created a separate project where we set up a template for reporting bugs.<\/li>\n<li>We planned to use a leaderboard to count points, which would be updated via webhooks, but something went wrong and we ended up having to count them manually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Every organizer of events encounters pitfalls, and to make it a little easier for you, I'll describe our problems that you can avoid.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the speakers suddenly got sick, and we had to find a replacement.<\/strong>.<br \/>\nI was incredibly lucky to find a replacement from the same team at 9 AM). But it's better not to rely on luck and have a backup. Or be prepared to give the necessary talk yourself.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>We didn't manage to roll out the functionality, and had to swap blocks.<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTo avoid discarding an entire block, it's better to have a backup plan.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>A portion of the test users dropped out, and we had to quickly recreate new ones.<\/strong>.<br \/>\nDouble-check the test users in advance or have the ability to create them quickly.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Almost none of the guys for whom we simplified the format showed up.<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no need to force anyone to come. Accept it.<br \/>\nThere's an option to strictly define the event format: 'amateur'\/'advanced', or prepare two options and decide which one to go with based on the situation.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Useful organizational points:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>book the meeting room in advance;<\/li>\n<li>arrange the tables, don\u2019t forget about extensions and power strips (charging laptops\/phones for a whole day might not be enough);<\/li>\n<li>automate the score counting process;<\/li>\n<li>prepare ranking tables;<\/li>\n<li>make paper handouts with logins and passwords for test users, instructions for working with Jira, scenarios;<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t forget to send reminders a week before the event, additionally specify what they need to bring (laptops\/devices);<\/li>\n<li>talk to colleagues about the event during demos, at lunches, over a cup of coffee;<\/li>\n<li>coordinate with the devops team to not update or deploy anything on that day;<\/li>\n<li>prepare the speakers;<\/li>\n<li>coordinate with feature owners and prepare plenty of test scenarios;<\/li>\n<li>order snacks (cookies\/candies) for munching;<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t forget to share the results of the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"rezultaty\">Results<\/h1>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, the guys managed to test 4 projects and log 192 bugs (of which 134 were unique) and 7 tasks with feature requests. Of course, the owners of some of these bugs already knew about them. But there were also unexpected findings. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All participants received sweet prizes. <\/p>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/6a0a6828ed1bd95869ff6664fd0d83f2.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the winners received thermoses, badges, and hoodies.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/ac8e82373dd69356df4f0ccb7e7b828b.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>What turned out to be interesting:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the format of strict sessions, where time is limited and you can't spend too much time thinking, was unexpected for participants;<\/li>\n<li>we managed to test the desktop, mobile version, and apps;<\/li>\n<li>we looked at many projects at once, there was no time to get bored;<\/li>\n<li>we got to know different colleagues and observed their approaches to logging bugs;<\/li>\n<li>we felt all the pain of testers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can be improved: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do fewer projects and increase the session time to 1.5 hours;<\/li>\n<li>prepare gifts\/souvenirs well in advance (sometimes coordination\/payment stretches over a month);<\/li>\n<li>relax and accept that something will not go as planned and there will be unforeseen circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"otzyvy\">Feedback<\/h1>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bug hunting: How to find 200 bugs in a day\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/a49295c2df074daf52150a89e7b9d37d.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Anna Bystrikova, system administrator: <\/strong>The testing process has been very enlightening for me. I learned about the testing process and felt the full \"pain\" of testers.<br \/>\nInitially, during the testing process, as a typical user, you check the basics: does the button work, can you navigate to the page, is the layout intact? But later, you realize that you need to think outside the box and try to \"break\" the application. Testers have a challenging job; it's not enough to just click around the interface; you need to think creatively and be extremely attentive.<br \/>\nThe impressions are all positive; even now, after some time has passed since the event, I can see how work is being done on the bugs I found. It's a completely different style of work. You try to break the system, not befriend it. We always had the opportunity to ask colleagues about testing. I learned more about prioritizing bugs (for example, I used to look for grammatical errors in texts, but the 'weight' of such a bug is very small; conversely, something that seemed unimportant turned out to be a critical bug that was fixed right away).<br \/>\nAt the event, the guys provided a summary of testing theory. It was useful for non-technical specialists.
