On the GitHub service a new feature has emerged<\/a><\/noindex> the ability to fund open projects. If a user cannot participate in development, they can fund a project they like. A similar system operates on Patreon.<\/p>\n

The system allows for monthly contributions of fixed amounts to developers who have registered as participants. Sponsors, in turn, are promised perks such as priority bug fixes. Moreover, GitHub will not take a percentage for mediation and will cover transaction costs for the first year. However, it's possible that processing fees may be introduced in the future. The financial side will be managed by the GitHub Sponsors Matching Fund.<\/p>\n

In addition to the new monetization scheme, GitHub has introduced a service to enhance project security. This system is built on the developments from Dependabot and automatically checks code in repositories for vulnerabilities. If a flaw is detected, the system will notify the developers and automatically create pull requests for remediation.<\/p>\n

Finally, a token and access key scanner has been introduced, which checks data during commits. If a key is detected as compromised, requests are sent to the service providers for confirmation of the leak. The available services include Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, GitHub, Google Cloud, Mailgun, Slack, Stripe, and Twilio.<\/p>\n

It has been noted that some users have already expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that GitHub has started supporting a donation system. Some explicitly state that Microsoft, which owns GitHub, is trying to profit from free software.<\/p>\n
