Of course, we could not overlook solutions such as ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC<\/a><\/noindex> the first laptop with AMD Ryzen and Acer Predator Helios 500 PH517-61<\/a><\/noindex> (with Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics); however, the emergence of these mobile computers has mostly been a pleasant exception to the rule. But everything is changing this year!<\/p>\n

Finally, gaming laptops based on mobile Ryzen chips and Radeon RX graphics have hit the shelves. One of the first is the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY, which uses a quad-core Ryzen 5 3550H and a 4GB version of Radeon RX 560X. It's very interesting to compare this device with other gaming systems that feature an Intel processor and mobile GeForce GTX 1050. That's exactly what we will do now.<\/p>\n

As far as I understand, the version of the TUF laptop that arrived at our editorial office is not the most high-end: it has only 8 GB of RAM but a 512 GB SSD. With pre-installed Windows 10 Home, this laptop is priced at 60,000 rubles. Interestingly, the model with a bundle of «256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD», but without a pre-installed operating system, averages 55,000 rubles. I found no other versions of the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY in Russian retail at the time of writing.<\/p>\n

All laptops in the TUF series based on the AMD platform are equipped with a Realtek 8821CE wireless module, which supports IEEE 802.11b\/g\/n\/ac standards on both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies and Bluetooth 4.2.<\/p>\n

The ASUS TUF FX505DY came with a 120 W external power supply weighing about 500 g.<\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Appearance and input devices<\/h2>\n

The model under consideration looks very similar to the laptop tested last year. ASUS FX570UD<\/a><\/noindex>. It\u2019s not just a coincidence that laptops bear similar markings in their names. The red accents and «notches» on the lid are definitely aimed to attract the youth and fans of AMD alike. This design is called Red matter (an idiom that translates to «red substance»). There is also a model available under the name «Golden Steel».<\/p>\n

The laptop's body is entirely made of plastic that tries hard to resemble brushed aluminum. I have no complaints about the quality of the material or the assembly, although a drawback present in the FX570UD model remains: the lid of the laptop «flexes» when pressed hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, the lid opens to about 135 degrees, making it convenient to use the device, even if it is placed on your lap. The hinges are quite stiff, allowing for a precise screen positioning that prevents it from wobbling during gaming sessions. At the same time, you can easily open the laptop lid with one hand.<\/p>\n

However, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY still looks more elegant than the FX570UD. Much of this is achieved thanks to the thin bezels, which the Taiwanese company's marketers call NanoEdge. Their thickness is only 6.5 mm on the left and right. However, the top and bottom bezels are noticeably thicker.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, if we continue discussing dimensions, the TUF Gaming FX505DY has rather typical specifications: its thickness is just under 27 mm and it weighs 2.2 kg without the external power supply.<\/p>\n

The main interfaces are located on the left side of the TUF Gaming FX505DY. Here you will find a port for connecting the power supply, an RJ-45 from the Realtek gigabit controller, an HDMI output, one USB 2.0, and two USB 3.1 Gen1 ports (all three are Type-A), along with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the right side of the laptop, there is only a slot for a Kensington lock. In general, this set of ports is sufficient for comfortable gaming, although this topic can certainly be debated.<\/p>\n

The keyboard in the TUF Gaming FX505DY is identical to that used in the previously tested model ASUS ROG Strix SCAR II (GL504GS)<\/a><\/noindex>. It is named HyperStrike. When comparing the keyboards, you can notice that their key sizes match, as well as such external elements as the edging and the dedicated WASD block. In both cases, a rather standard scissor mechanism for gaming devices is used, requiring a specific force of 62 grams to activate the switch. The key travel is 1.8 mm. The manufacturer claims that the keyboard can handle any number of simultaneous key presses, and each key is rated for 20 million presses. The entire keyboard is equipped with a three-level red backlighting (but not RGB, as in the case with the ROG Strix SCAR II).<\/p>\n

There are no major complaints about the keyboard layout. For instance, the TUF Gaming FX505DY has large Ctrl and Shift keys, which are often used in shooters. Personally, I would like to have a larger Enter key, but the existing one can be gotten used to in just a couple of days. The arrow keys are a bit inconvenient to use, as they are traditionally very small on ASUS laptops.<\/p>\n

The power button is located where it should be \u2014 away from the other keys. There are no additional buttons for adjusting the volume of the speakers and microphone, for example.<\/p>\n

The device's webcam operates at a resolution of 720p at 30 Hz. As you can imagine, the image quality of such a webcam is quite poor. While it might be sufficient for Skype calls with blurry and noisy visuals, it certainly won't do for streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube.<\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Internal structure and upgrade capabilities<\/h2>\n

The laptop is quite easy to disassemble: just unscrew 10 screws and remove the plastic bottom.<\/p>\n

The cooling system consists of two fans and two heat pipes, with only one allocated for the central processor. Note that the TDP level of the Ryzen 5 3550H is 35W.<\/p>\n

The test version of the TUF Gaming FX505DY is equipped with 8 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM. The RAM is provided as a single SK Hynix module, with the second SO-DIMM slot available. Mobile Ryzen chips support the installation of up to 32 GB of RAM.<\/p>\n

The main and only storage device is the NVMe model Kingston RBUSNS81554P3512GJ with a capacity of 512GB. There is a spot for a 2.5-inch storage device, but in the case of our TUF Gaming FX505DY version, it remains empty.<\/p>\n
