\nGood day, esteemed Habrovchans, friends, and acquaintances. As a preface, I would like to share the implementation of an interesting project or, as it is fashionable to say now, an interesting case regarding the deployment of VDI infrastructure. It seemed that there are many articles about VDI, including step-by-step guides, comparisons of direct competitors, and again, step-by-step instructions, followed by comparisons of competitive solutions. What new information could be offered? <\/p>\n

What is new and not present in many articles is a description of the economic effect of implementation, the calculation of ownership costs of the chosen solution, and even more interesting \u2014 a comparison of ownership costs with similar solutions. In this case, based on the article title, the key word is cheap<\/b>: what does this mean? One of my colleagues and a friend had a task at the beginning of the year to implement VDI with a minimal number of 'windows', namely a free hypervisor, a Linux desktop, a free database, and other methods to minimize costs with our 'beloved' Microsoft.
\n<\/a><\/noindex>
\n Why with 'minimal windows'? Here I will digress from the narrative and describe the circumstances that piqued my interest in revealing this particular topic. My acquaintance, whom I assisted in the project deployment, works in a medium-sized company with about 500 employees; not all software is licensed, but efforts to optimize it were underway. Most front-end information systems are adapted to the web, and there was a good atmosphere until one fine day when a collector, Microsoft\u2019s 'personal manager' assigned to the company, came and began, not to offer or request, but to demand that everything be urgently legalized, making many conclusions about the used solutions based on open sources and press releases. It seemed that the company was not opposed, but this insistence and intrusiveness, bordering on threats, spurred the long-standing plans for import substitution, minimizing the use of MS products, and maximizing the shift to OpenSource. An outsider may not fully believe the described situation with the representative of a software giant, but in my case, a similar situation occurred 1 to 1 with the pressure from a Microsoft employee personally regarding me. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, this serves as an additional trigger to revisit the IT department's development strategy with the aim of diversifying the use of paid software products. Again, the trend of OpenSource solutions penetrating businesses is gaining more and more ground, and the discussion on this topic took place at the IT-OS'019 conference, with the slide below serving as complete confirmation.<\/p>\n

\"VDI:
\n So, within the aforementioned organization, a goal was set: to expedite the licensing of MS products while maximizing the implementation and use of OpenSource solutions. For user access, it was decided to transition from 'terminal' setups and Windows VDI entirely to Linux VDI. The choice of Citrix VDI was made due to the small administration staff, the large number of branches, and the ease of deployment and scalability, along with an already purchased product.<\/p>\n

In the first part of the article, I want to focus on the TCO calculation for owning Linux VDI infrastructure and the choice of a solution based on Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, commonly referred to as XenDesktop, and the good old XenServer, now called Citrix Hypervisor (oh, that rebranding, suddenly changing the name of almost the entire product line), and respectively Linux desktops. It seems everyone knows that the synergy of VDI\/APP involves the use of VMware as the hypervisor, Citrix as the application delivery controller, and Microsoft as the guest OS. But what if you need the same technology but with minimal costs? Well, let's calculate.<\/p>\n

First, I will discuss the disposition before, and then what it 'cost' to switch to the new platform.
\nFor simplicity and completeness of the picture, let\u2019s consider only the software part, as the hardware was already in place and fulfilling its function. <\/p>\n

So, in the beginning, there was... a wonderful EMC storage system, an HP Blade chassis c7000, and 7 G8. servers<\/a> in the role of virtualization VDI. Windows Server 2012R2 with the Hyper-V role was installed on the servers and SCVMM was used. The purchased VDI platform based on XenDesktop 7.18 was deployed, and several terminal farms were set up. Knowing the layout and the need for licensing a large amount of software, let us compare the costs of deploying Linux VDI versus a complete Microsoft solution 'turnkey'. The translation was decided to be implemented gradually, starting with the company's branches, and the second phase was to involve the remaining workstations in the government office.<\/p>\n

\"VDI:
\n
\nOn the terminal farm, 1C was mainly used, and the VDI workstations operated the standard office suite, email, files, and internet (their main function was strictly reading and printing). <\/p>\n

Knowing the list of required software, let us calculate the total cost of ownership for the Microsoft solution. <\/p>\n

Windows Server:<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Microsoft licensing requirements, the following conditions must be met:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. All physical cores must be licensed in server<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. The minimum package of 2-core server licenses is 8 units (or one 16-core license).<\/li>\n
  3. The minimum package of 2-core processor licenses is 4 units (this rule applies if the number of processors exceeds two).<\/li>\n
  4. The Standard license package provides the right to use one physical and two virtual instances of Windows Server on one server.<\/li>\n
  5. The Datacenter license package provides the right to use one physical and any number of virtual instances of Windows Server on one server.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \nIt turns out that if more than 13 virtual instances of Windows Server and Windows workstations need to be installed on the server, it is economically sensible to purchase the Datacenter edition, which we will consider. <\/p>\n

    Windows 10 VDI:<\/b><\/p>\n

    According to Microsoft's licensing policy, access to virtual desktops with the client OS must be done from a device that has a valid Microsoft VDA (Virtual Desktop Access) subscription, except for PCs covered by Software Assurance. In our case, it is actually necessary to purchase and annually renew a subscription for 300 DVA licenses.<\/p>\n

    \"I\u2019m buying VDI software from VMware \/ Citrix \/ another vendor.\"<\/p>\n

    Do I still need Windows VDA? Yes. If you are accessing a Windows client OS as your guest operating system in the datacenter from any non-SA device (including thin clients, iPads, etc.), Windows VDA is the appropriate licensing vehicle regardless of the VDI software vendor you choose. The only scenario where you would not need Windows VDA is if you were using PCs covered under Software Assurance as the access devices, since virtual desktop access rights are included as a benefit of SA.<\/p>\n

    SCVMM:<\/b><\/p>\n

    The System Center Virtual Machine Manager, part of Microsoft System Center, is not offered as a standalone product. There\u2019s no point in debating this approach; it is what it is. <\/p>\n

    Considering the licensing requirements:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. All physical cores in the server must be licensed.<\/li>\n
    2. The minimum package of 2-core server licenses is 8 units (or one 16-core license).<\/li>\n

      \n The listed prices are retail; however, a discount may be possible given such a volume, but unlike Cisco or Lenovo GLP prices, forget about a 50% or 70% discount. From experience with MS, it\u2019s hard to see anything above 5%. Therefore, the total cost of ownership will exceed 5 million rubles in the first year, reaching about 9 million rubles over three years. This is not a small figure, and for a medium-sized company, it\u2019s considerable. Thus, from an economic standpoint, the decision doesn\u2019t seem straightforward. <\/p>\n

      To summarize, after calculating the project's solution, the management made a positive decision for its approval. <\/p>\n

      Conclusion:<\/h3>\n

      \n Ultimately, the software combination turned out to be: Citrix Hypervisor, Linux guest OS, all managed by Citrix Virtual Desktops. Saving 3 million rubles per year is significant. Was it easy to implement this project? No! Is it a panacea for such a solution? No! But it definitely warrants detailed consideration for implementation based on Citrix VDI with Linux guest systems. There are certainly downsides, and I will discuss them in more detail in the second part, which will provide a complete step-by-step description of the solution.<\/p>\n

      In conclusion, I want to say that I do not claim to make a final judgment, but the case itself was very interesting. <\/p>\n
