\nDo you remember the charming little cat that sneezed in the opening of a Soviet cartoon? We remember, and we found it \u2014 along with a bunch of other animated fantasies. In childhood, they scared and perplexed us, as they raised serious, adult themes. It's time to revisit old cartoons to discover what kind of future they dreamed of in that country.
\n<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

1977: \"Polygon\"<\/h3>\n

\nAnimator Anatoly Petrov contributed to many famous Soviet cartoons, from \"The Bremen Town Musicians\" to \"Boniface's Holidays.\" His independent work was much more interesting: he created realistic three-dimensional graphics. The most famous example of Petrov's style is the short cartoon \"Polygon,\" based on the anti-war story by science fiction writer Severyan Gansovsky.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe plot is simple: an unnamed inventor creates an invulnerable tank that reads the enemy's thoughts. Field tests of the perfected weapon take place on a tropical island \u2014 apparently a reference to the Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls. Included in the military commission is a general under whose command the hero's son died. The tank destroys the soldiers, then its vengeful creator.<\/p>\n

\nTo create a sense of volume, characters were drawn on two layers of celluloid, with one filmed out of focus. In tense moments, the blurred image gains sharpness. The camera is constantly moving, pausing only briefly. There is no blood in the frame, and the only musical accompaniment is the famous song \"Tanha Shodam\" by Ahmad Zahir. All this together conveys feelings of anxiety, fear, and nostalgia \u2014 sensations of that era when the \"Doomsday Clock\" showed 9 minutes to midnight. Interestingly, in 2018, the hand was moved to 23:58 \u2014 does that mean the prediction came true?<\/p>\n

1978: \"Contact\"<\/h3>\n

\nIn 1968, Canadian animator George Dunning created the famous \"Yellow Submarine.\" The cartoon only reached the Soviet Union in the 80s on pirated tapes. However, back in 1978, director and artist Vladimir Tarasov made his own vibrant musical phantasmagoria. Short, yet the main character unmistakably resembles John Lennon. This is thanks to artist Nikolai Koshkin, who \"quoted\" the Western animated musical.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe Soviet \"Lennon\" is an artist who goes out into the open air. In nature, he encounters an alien, who, in its own way, is also an artist. The shapeless creature transforms into the objects it sees. At first, the man is scared, but then he teaches the guest to whistle the melody of \"Speak Softly Love\" from \"The Godfather.\" Unlike its distant relatives from \"Annihilation,\" the alien befriends the man and leaves with him into the sunset.<\/p>\n

\nLife hack: turn off the original soundtrack of \"Contact\" and turn on \"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.\" You will notice that the animation lines up almost perfectly with the music.<\/p>\n

1980: \"The Return\"<\/h3>\n

\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\n\"The Return\" is another animated film by Tarasov. It describes mundane events by the standards of science fiction: the cargo spaceship \"Valday T-614\" got caught in a meteor stream and sustained damage, making it possible to land only manually. The pilot is advised to get a good night's sleep before landing. He falls into a deep sleep, and attempts to wake him fail. However, when the ship's course passes over his home village, the cosmonaut somehow senses this, wakes up, and lands the ship.<\/p>\n

\nIt is unclear whether the hero's amnesia poses a disaster. The music (5th Symphony by Gustav Mahler) eloquently indicates that the situation is distressing. The authors consulted cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, so the film accurately reflects the technical aspects of space travel. At the same time, realism and mundanity are shattered by glaring references to \"Alien,\" which came out just a year before. The cargo spacecraft resembles a Giger-esque alien ship from the inside, and the pilot himself bears little resemblance to a human. This short film is just as terrifying as the classic scene with the facehugger.<\/p>\n

1981: \"Space Aliens\"<\/h3>\n

\nThe famous sci-fi writers the Strugatsky brothers wrote several scripts for animated films, but Soviet censorship \"cut\" them all. All except one, which Arkady Strugatsky wrote together with his friend, writer and translator Marian Tkachev. This was the script for the first episode of \"Space Aliens.\"<\/p>\n

\nPromising plot: a spaceship descends to Earth, and aliens send out black robot probes. A group of scientists tries to figure out what the cosmic visitors want. It turns out they want to share technology. Was 'Arrival' ordered?<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nDrawn in an avant-garde constructivist style, this cartoon lasts just over fifteen minutes. It feels much longer because the pace of events on screen is uneven and slow. The lethargic calm with which the voice actors deliver excessively long phrases particularly highlights this characteristic feature of 'The Invaders'.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\n'Experimental' philosophical parables were one of the favorite genres of Soviet animators. Nevertheless, 'The Invaders' cross the line between 'this is deep' and 'this is tedious.' It seems Strugatsky realized this himself, which is why the second episode was filmed without him. In it, aliens test the moral resilience of humans. People withstand the test, and everything seems to end well. And it's good that it ends well.<\/p>\n

1984: 'There Will Come Soft Rains'<\/h3>\n

\nIn 1950, American writer Ray Bradbury wrote one of the most famous post-apocalyptic stories in the genre's history. 'There Will Come Soft Rains' tells how a robotic 'smart house' continues to operate after a nuclear bomb explosion. Thirty-four years later, 'Uzbekfilm' created a short, emotional cartoon based on the story.<\/p>\n

\r\n \"Play\r\n
<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nBradbury's text is conveyed with some creative liberties. For example, in the story, some time passes after the catastrophe\u2014days or a month. In the cartoon, the robot, not understanding what happened, shakes the ashes of the incinerated owners from their beds. Then a bird flies into the house, and the robot chases it, inadvertently destroying the house.<\/p>\n

\nThis adaptation won awards at three international festivals and one nationwide festival. The director and screenwriter of the cartoon was actor and director Nazim Tulakhodjaev from Tashkent. By the way, his work with Bradbury's material did not end there: three years later, he shot a film based on the story 'The Veldt.' Of the two adaptations, viewers particularly remembered 'There Will Come Soft Rains' because the horror of global war is difficult to overshadow or dispel.<\/p>\n

1985: 'The Contract'<\/h3>\n

\nSoviet animators loved to adapt works of foreign science fiction. As a result, colorful projects emerged, true fruits of passion. One example is the cartoon \"Contract,\" based on the story of the same name by Robert Silverberg. The vivid, avant-garde style, so favored by director Tarasov, resembles pop art. The musical accompaniment features excerpts from the jazz composition I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby performed by Ella Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nBoth the original story and the animated film begin similarly: a colonist fends off monsters on an uninhabited planet. A robot salesman comes to his aid, who turns out to have released these monsters to force the man to buy his goods. The colonist contacts the company that sent him to the planet and discovers that, under the terms of the contract, he cannot trade with the robot. Furthermore, he will be overcharged for sending everyday items like razors since they are obligated to supply him only with life essentials.<\/p>\n

\nThen the plot of the original story diverges from that of the adaptation. In the story, the robot threatens to shoot the colonist. The colonist cleverly extricates himself from the situation by demanding money from the company to save his life, and after being denied, he breaks the contract and claims the planet by right of discovery. Even ironic approval of capitalist practices was taboo for the Soviet Union. So, in the animated film, the colonist's company and the robot wage war. The robot sacrifices itself to keep the human warm during an unexpected snowstorm. Despite the clear ideological message, the animated film leaves a pleasant impression.<\/p>\n

1985\u20131995: \"Fantadrom\"<\/h3>\n

\n\"Soviet

\nThe children's animated series Fantadroms looks as though it was drawn by Western animators. In fact, the first three episodes were produced by \"Telefilm-Riga\", followed by another ten from the Latvian studio Dauka.<\/p>\n

\r\n \"Play\r\n
<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe main character of \"Fantadrom\" is the shape-shifting robot cat Indriks XIII, who sneezes at the beginning and end of each episode. Together with his friends, the cosmic cat saves aliens and humans from unpleasant situations like fires, misunderstandings, or sudden shortages of salt at breakfast. The plots of \"Fantadrom\" unfold without words, relying solely on imagery, music, and sounds, much like Disney's \"Fantasia.\"<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe first three \"Soviet\" series appear serious: they focus on spaceships and the metropolis where Indrik lives. The new ten episodes target children, shifting the focus to what is known as slapstick comedy. If the studios had more resources and opportunities, it\u2019s easy to imagine that Fantadroms could have become a cosmic \"Tom and Jerry\". Unfortunately, the series' potential remained unrealized.<\/p>\n

1986: \"Battle\"<\/h3>\n

\nAnother adaptation of Western science fiction, this time based on a story by Stephen King. A former soldier, turned hitman, kills the director of a toy factory. After completing the order, he receives a package with toy soldiers produced at the factory of his victim. The soldiers somehow come to life and attack the killer. The battle ends in the toys' victory, as the kit contained a miniature thermonuclear charge.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe cartoon is executed in total animation technique. This means that along with the characters, the backgrounds move and change to convey camera motion. This expensive and labor-intensive method is rarely used in hand-drawn animation, but when it is, the results are impactful. Total animation gave \"Battle\" incredible dynamism. The short cartoon is just as captivating as \"Die Hard,\" which was released two years later.<\/p>\n

\nAn attentive viewer will notice in the first minute of the cartoon a reference to the scene of driving through Tokyo's interchanges in Tarkovsky's \"Solaris.\" The futuristic landscape with an endless labyrinth of roads emphasizes that everything is happening in a near, dark future.<\/p>\n

1988: \"The Pass\"<\/h3>\n

\nWhen discussing fantastic Soviet animation, one cannot overlook the iconic \"The Pass.\" The cartoon is based on the first chapter of the novella by science fiction writer Kir Bulychev, titled \"The Settlement,\" and the author himself wrote the script.<\/p>\n

\n\"The Settlement\" tells the story of a space expedition whose ship made an emergency landing on an unknown planet. The surviving crew members had to flee from the ship, escaping radiation from the damaged engine. They founded a settlement, learned to hunt with bows and arrows, raised children, and repeatedly attempted to return through a pass to the ship. In the cartoon, a group of three teenagers and an adult sets off for the ship. The adult dies, while the children, better adapted to the dangerous world, reach their destination.<\/p>\n

\r\n \"Play\r\n
<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\n\"The Pass\" stands out even among other avant-garde sci-fi cartoons of that era. The graphics for the film were created by mathematician Anatoly Fomenko, known for his controversial historical theories. To depict the terrifying alien world, he used his illustrations for \"The Master and Margarita.\" The music was composed by Alexander Gradsky, including a song with lyrics by poet Sasha Cherny.<\/p>\n

\nThe director of \"The Pass\" was Vladimir Tarasov, already mentioned several times in this selection. Tarasov read \"The Settlement\" in the magazine \"Knowledge is Power\" and was struck by the question of what human society really represents. The result was a terrifying and captivating cartoon with an open ending.<\/p>\n

1989: \"Tigers May Roam Here\"<\/h3>\n

\n\"Soviet

\nLong before James Cameron filmed his \"Avatar,\" Ray Bradbury wrote a short story on the same theme. A human ship arrives on an uninhabited planet to extract resources. The beautiful alien world possesses intelligence and welcomes the Earthlings. When a representative of the sponsoring company tries to start drilling, the planet sends a tiger to confront him. The expedition leaves, abandoning one young astronaut.<\/p>\n

\r\n \"Play\r\n
<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nSoviet animators managed to almost seamlessly translate Bradbury's philosophical story to the screen. In the animated film, the evil expedition leader manages to activate the bomb before his demise. The Earthlings sacrifice themselves to save the planet: they load the bomb onto their ship and fly far away. The critique of predatory capitalism was present in the original text, so the dramatic twist was added to inject action into the plot. Unlike 'The Contract', this animated film did not include opposing meanings.<\/p>\n

1991\u20131992: 'Vampires of Geona'<\/h3>\n

\nSoviet animation did not immediately die out with the collapse of the Union. In the 90s, several distinctly 'Soviet' science fiction animated films were released.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nIn 1991 and 1992, director Gennady Tishchenko presented the animated films 'Vampires of Geona' and 'Masters of Geona'. He wrote the script himself based on his own story. The plot goes as follows: inspector of the Cosmic Ecological Commission (CEC) Yanin travels to the planet Geona. There, local pterodactyls ('vampires') bite colonists and hinder an interstellar corporation from developing mineral deposits. It turns out that the planet is inhabited, with local intelligent beings living underwater in symbiosis with the vampires and other fauna. The corporation leaves the planet, as its activities harm the environment.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe most striking feature of the animated films: two American characters, modeled after Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. The giant animated 'Arnie' is somewhat akin to the hyper-stylized superheroes from 90s comics. Next to him, the bearded Russian Yanin seems like a child. Against the backdrop of unexpected Hollywood 'clich\u00e9s', the main philosophical message of the film somewhat gets lost.<\/p>\n

\nThe animated films were supposed to become a series called 'Star World'. At the end of the second episode, Yanin optimistically states that humans will return to Geona, but his words were not destined to come true. <\/p>\n

1994\u20131995: 'AMBA'<\/h3>\n

\n\"Soviet

\nA couple of years after \"Geona,\" Tishchenko made a second attempt to continue the space saga. Two episodes of the animated series \"AMBA\" tell the story of how a scientist developed a way to grow cities from biomass. One such settlement, \"AMBA\" (Autonomous Bioarchitectural Ensemble), was grown in the Martian desert, while another was planted on a distant planet. Communication with the project was interrupted, and inspector Yanin, already familiar to us, was sent there with an unnamed partner.<\/p>\n

\r\n \"Play\r\n
<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nThe visual style of the film became significantly more \"Western.\" However, the content remained true to the previous course of solid Soviet science fiction. Tishchenko is a fan of the science fiction writer Ivan Efremov. In two short animated films, the director attempted to encapsulate the idea that in the future, technological civilization will come to an end (hence the title).<\/p>\n

<\/div>\r\n <\/div><\/center>
\nSerious problems arose with the exposition; this is a typical case where what is happening is told rather than shown. There are plenty of battles and heroism on screen, but the pace of events is \"jerky\": first, the heroes are attacked by alien tentacles, and then they patiently listen to the story of where these tentacles came from.<\/p>\n

\nPerhaps in the third part of \"Star World,\" it would be possible to eliminate the shortcomings of the predecessors. Unfortunately, the Soviet tradition has finally vanished in the new millennium, so now all these animated films are history.<\/p>\n
