Stasiek Michalski, one of the active members of the openSUSE Artwork Team, raised<\/a><\/noindex> for discussion the feasibility of rebranding openSUSE. Currently, both the SUSE company and the openSUSE project use the same logo, which causes confusion and distorted perceptions of the project among potential users. On the other hand, the SUSE and openSUSE projects are inextricably linked, especially after the transition to using shared<\/a><\/noindex> base system packages, which highlights the similarities between the logos. <\/p>\n

In addition to the overlap with the SUSE brand, there are technical reasons for changing the logo, such as a color that is too bright for printing on a light background, poor scalability, and unsuitability for very small buttons. The logo is difficult to read and loses recognition even at a size of 48×48. Moreover, there is a desire to have a logo that can identify the project without text, solely by the image (currently, the SUSE and openSUSE icons use the same image of a green chameleon). <\/p>\n

The discussion also mentions the issue of renaming the project in order to eliminate overlap with the \"SUSE\" brand (similar to how Fedora and CentOS are not tied to the Red Hat brand), to avoid confusion with capitalization in the name (instead of openSUSE, it is often written as OpenSUSE, OpenSuSe, etc.), and to consider the wishes of the FOSS Foundation regarding the term \"open\". In the first stage, the community is offered to decide whether to change the logo and the name, after which possible options can be discussed.<\/p>\n

The question of creating an independent organization, the openSUSE Foundation, is being considered, which would receive the new trademarks for the project. If the current logo and name are continued upon the establishment of the openSUSE Foundation, a special agreement regarding the rights to use the SUSE brand would be required.<\/p>\n
