Unity Technologies announced<\/a><\/noindex> on the formation of a preliminary release of the Unity Editor for creating games on GNU\/Linux. The release was formed after several years of publishing unofficial experimental builds<\/a><\/noindex>. The company now plans to provide official support for Linux.<\/p>\n

It is noted that the range of supported operating systems is expanding due to the growing demand for Unity in various fields, from gaming and film industry to automotive and transportation management. A preview version of the editor for Ubuntu 16.04\/18.04 and CentOS 7 is being offered for testing (installation through UnityHub<\/noindex>), with feedback on its performance being accepted on the Unity forum<\/a><\/noindex>. Full support for the editor on Linux is expected in the Unity 2019.3 release. <\/p>\n

The proposed editor build is available<\/a><\/noindex> is available to all users with Personal (free), Plus, and Pro licenses starting from Unity 2019.1. Developers intend to enhance the stability and reliability of the release for Linux to the highest possible level, focusing on ensuring operation in Ubuntu 16.04\/18.04 or CentOS 7 with the GNOME desktop on x86-64 architecture systems, using NVIDIA proprietary drivers or the open-source AMD driver from Mesa. In the future, the officially supported Linux environments may be expanded.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that this is not the first instance when serious programs or development systems related to games are ported to GNU\/Linux. Earlier, Valve initiated<\/a><\/noindex> launched the Proton project to run games from Steam on GNU\/Linux. This is expected to expand the scope of application of GNU\/Linux to gaming PCs.<\/p>\n
