If your organization hasn't acquired the product you\u2019re interested in, gaining access can be challenging. While individual plans may exist, not everyone is willing to pay out of pocket. On the other hand, open or free products created by academics often suffer from inconvenient design and lack of support. <\/p>\n<p>You can try many different tools before settling on one that works. We decided to highlight some of the most notable ones on Hacker News and in GitHub collections.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding Sources<\/h2>\n<p>\n<b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\">DOAJ<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> is a curated directory of open access scientific journals. It contains over 4 million articles from 13,000 publications representing 130 countries. In the near future, the platform <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1gVGp6aXtrOCp9z5qeNi413RZc0Vs5UQn\/view\">planning to<\/a><\/noindex> will significantly increase the number of humanitarian, niche, and non-English journals. Interestingly, DOAJ offers an <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/api\/v1\/docs\">open API<\/a><\/noindex> for automating searches based on various parameters.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/peer.us\/\">Peerus<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> helps track fresh thematic publications. Each day, the archive is updated by an average of 7,000 new materials. Peerus <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/peer.us\/faq\/#pdf-dowload\">provides<\/a><\/noindex> integrates with university proxies for one-click material downloads.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/\">Crossref<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> is an open archive for publishing and searching scientific papers. The project aims to bring together researchers from around the world on a single platform to collaboratively tackle research challenges. The site has already collected one hundred million records. You can find the required content using metadata and keywords.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/scirate.com\/\">SciRate<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> is a web application for searching research on <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\">arXiv.org<\/a><\/noindex>. There are filters for scientific fields and publication dates. Additionally, a user rating system has been implemented, based on which each article is assigned a rating.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/arxiv-sanity.com\/\">ArXiv Sanity Preserver<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 accelerates search on arXiv.org using machine learning algorithms. The homepage displays the latest materials along with annotations. Publications can be searched by keywords in the search bar, as well as by similar features using the show similar link located at the top right corner of each document.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/\">OSF<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 an open hub for searching and creating scientific projects. Here, research work can be structured\u2014version control can be managed and tags can be added to help others find the publication. The platform is cloud-based, making access to projects easier. Work can be done independently and shared with community members.<\/p>\n<h2>Organization and citation<\/h2>\n<p>\n<b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.doi2bib.org\/\">doi2bib<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 a search engine for working with reference lists. A digital object identifier (DOI) is entered into the search bar, and the system displays metadata for the found material to organize the bibliography in <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BibTeX\">BibTeX<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jabref.org\/\">JabRef<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 an application that optimizes work with bibliographic lists in BibTeX format. The generated list can be exported to HTML, Docbook, BibTeXML, MODS, RTF, Refer\/Endnote, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice. The utility can be run on Java VM (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/JabRef\/jabref\/issues\/2594\">version 8<\/a><\/noindex>), on Win, Linux, and OS X.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/\">Mendeley<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 a reference manager and cloud platform that allows access to project files from any device. Mendeley also offers recommendation capabilities and communication tools.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.docear.org\/\">Docear<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> \u2014 an open tool for organizing sources and building scientific work based on them. The user needs to specify a folder that will act as a \u2018library\u2019 of materials for a specific project. The software will automatically scan it and add found files to its database. The database can be structured as a \u2018tree\u2019, combining works of similar focus into one branch. Comments and highlights in PDF files are automatically imported and displayed in the interface. When work with sources is completed, Docear helps create a final \u2018mind map\u2019 and provides the necessary citations.<\/p>\n<p><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/duecredit\/duecredit\">Duecredit<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> You can quote not only text but also code. If your program borrows algorithms or methods from scientific works, this library will help you correctly reference them. Currently, the library is available in Python.<\/p>\n<h2>Document Management<\/h2>\n<p>\n<b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/sphinx-doc.org\/\">Sphinx<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> an instrument for 'compiling' documents into <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ReStructuredText\">reStructuredText\u2019s<\/a><\/noindex> HTML, ePub, Texinfo, man pages, and plain text. Supports <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphinx-doc.org\/en\/master\/develop.html#extensions\">50 extensions<\/a><\/noindex>, automatic indexing of software components, creating links for functions, classes, quotes, terms, and more.
