After transitioning<\/a><\/noindex> CentOS has been under the wing of Red Hat, and all kinds of support for the project have been announced, but the current status of work on CentOS 8 is lagging behind the plan<\/a><\/noindex>. Despite the announced<\/a><\/noindex> status updates, only the download page and the build server have been created, on which, according to the koji statistics<\/a><\/noindex>, something is built once a week. <\/p>\n

The initial build cycle is still not completed, although it was supposed to finish back in May according to the plan. The initial cycle forms a set of packages that are minimally necessary for the further building of other packages. This set is then gradually expanded in subsequent build cycles. Kernel builds are currently being executed without fixes for vulnerabilities MDS<\/a><\/noindex> (Microarchitectural Data Sampling), and it is unclear when a kernel with patches to block MDS will be ready. Work on assessing of the source code<\/a><\/noindex> the packages, preparing patches to remove Red Hat branding elements, and selecting the style of design<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

Previously, new significant releases of CentOS were released one or two months after the corresponding release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Meanwhile, CentOS developers warned<\/a><\/noindex>, that during the preparation of a new significant branch, unforeseen complexities may arise that could require additional development time.<\/p>\n
