Microsoft announced<\/a><\/noindex> On the formation of new experimental builds of Windows Insider (build 18917), which include the previously announced layer WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux), enabling the execution of Linux executable files within Windows. For example, when unpacking a compressed archive, WSL2 is 20 times faster than WSL1, and it is 2-5 times faster for operations like 'git clone', 'npm install', 'apt update', and 'apt upgrade'.<\/p>\n

WSL2 offers a component based on the Linux kernel 4.19, which runs in a Windows environment using a virtual machine already applied in Azure. Updates for the Linux kernel are delivered through the Windows Update mechanism and are tested in Microsoft\u2019s continuous integration infrastructure. All prepared changes for integrating the kernel with WSL promise to be published under the GPLv2 open-source license. The prepared patches include optimizations to reduce kernel startup time, decrease memory consumption, and retain only the minimal necessary set of drivers and subsystems in the kernel. <\/p>\n

Support for the older version WSL1 is retained, and both systems can be used side by side depending on user preferences. WSL2 can serve as a transparent replacement for WSL1. As in WSL1, the user space components are executed separately and are based on builds from various distributions.
