Phison is working on a new controller designed for next-generation solid-state drives using the high-speed PCI Express 4.0 interface. A key feature of this innovation will be support for higher data transfer rates \u2014 up to 6500 MB\/s.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Phison showcased its PS5016 controller designed for next-generation solid-state drives capable of connecting via four PCIe 4.0 lanes. This controller enabled the creation of solid-state drives with an impressive read speed of 5000 MB\/s. Similar innovations were exhibited at the recent Computex 2019 by many manufacturers, including Gigabyte<\/a><\/noindex>, Corsair<\/a><\/noindex> and others.<\/p>\n

\"At<\/p>\n

Also at Computex 2019, Phison's CEO, Pua Khein-Seng, stated that \"the best is yet to come.\" By this, he meant faster controllers for drives with PCIe 4.0 interface. He promised that in the first quarter of 2020, Phison plans to release a controller capable of achieving data transfer speeds of 6500 MB\/s. This is nearly double the speed of most of the fastest M.2 NVMe solid-state drives with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the theoretical maximum bandwidth of four PCIe 4.0 lanes is 8 GB\/s. However, in reality, such speeds are unattainable, just as the theoretical 4 GB\/s for the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface cannot be reached. The fastest M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 drives, such as the Samsung 970 Pro, achieve speeds of 3500 MB\/s. Therefore, we can speculate that devices with the new PCIe interface could provide double the speed \u2014 around 7000 MB\/s.<\/p>\n

Thus, the upcoming Phison controller with its 6500 MB\/s will be quite close to maximum performance levels. It is also noteworthy that Phison is currently a leader in adopting the new PCIe 4.0 standard. Samsung has yet to make any announcements regarding plans for drives with PCIe 4.0, while Micron has promised to release SSDs with the new interface by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
