As part of the project VKHR<\/a><\/noindex> (Vulkan Hair Renderer) supported by AMD and RTG Game Engineering, is developing a realistic hair rendering system written using the Vulkan graphics API. The system supports real-time rendering when modeling hairstyles consisting of hundreds of thousands of strands and millions of linear segments. By changing the level of detail, it is possible to vary between performance and rendering quality. Visualization of various types of hairstyles and fur is supported. The project's code is written in C++17 and is provided<\/a><\/noindex> is licensed under the MIT License.<\/p>\n

AMD previously worked on hair rendering technology as part of the TressFX<\/a><\/noindex>project, which used Direct3D. In the VKHR project, the stated technology was completely rewritten based on Vulkan and expanded with light scattering simulation, shadow casting, and transparency, implemented using GLSL shaders. VKHR includes a built-in ray tracing system based on the Embree<\/noindex> library from Intel. Fast linear transformation is used for smoothing, and a quick voxelization scheme is used to create a volume effect. Hairstyle models are loaded in the hair<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n
