National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) revealed<\/a><\/noindex> information about a breach of its internal infrastructure that went undetected for nearly a year. Notably, the network was isolated from external threats, and the breach was executed internally using a Raspberry Pi that was connected without authorization at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. <\/p>\n

This board was used by employees as an entry point into the local network. During the breach of an external user system that had access to a gateway, the attackers were able to gain access to the board and through it to the entire internal network of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which developed the Curiosity rover and the telescopes launched into space.<\/p>\n

Signs of unauthorized access to the internal network were detected in April 2018. During the attack, the intruders managed to intercept 23 files, totaling about 500 MB, related to missions on Mars. Two files contained information classified as export-controlled dual-use technology. Additionally, the attackers gained access to the satellite antenna network DSN<\/a><\/noindex> (Deep Space Network), used for receiving and sending data to the spacecraft involved in NASA missions.<\/p>\n

Among the reasons that facilitated the breach are
\nuntimely patching of vulnerabilities in internal systems. In particular, some critical vulnerabilities remained unaddressed for over 180 days. The department also maintained the ITSDB (Information Technology Security Database) inventory database inadequately, which was supposed to reflect all devices connected to the internal network. Analysis showed that this database was filled out carelessly and did not accurately reflect the status of the network, including the Raspberry Pi used by employees. The internal network itself was not segmented into smaller parts, which simplified the attackers' activities.<\/p>\n
