We decided to discuss the projects (Kata Containers, Zuul, FATE, and CommunityBridge) that recently joined two major funds and the direction in which they are developing.<\/p>\n

How is OpenStack Foundation doing<\/h2>\n

\nThe OpenStack Foundation (OSF) was established in 2012 to supported<\/a><\/noindex> develop the open cloud platform OpenStack. The organization quickly grew its community. As of today, the OpenStack Foundation includes<\/a><\/noindex> has more than 500 participants. Among them are telecom companies, cloud providers, hardware manufacturers, and even domain name registrars.<\/p>\n

For a long time, the OpenStack Foundation focused on developing its namesake project. However, at the beginning of the year, the fund changed its focus.<\/a><\/noindex>The organization began to support<\/a><\/noindex> projects related to machine learning, CI\/CD, edge computing, and containerization.<\/p>\n

As a result, several new projects joined the fund.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nWhat are these projects?<\/b> At the Open Infrastructure Summit held in May, OSF representatives , that over the past three years, the company has spent $30 billion on expanding its data center network. Since then, this figure has only increased.<\/a><\/noindex> talked about the first \"newcomers\" \u2014 they are has become<\/a><\/noindex> Kata Containers<\/a><\/noindex> and Zuul<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

The first project focuses on developing secure virtual machines whose performance is comparable to that of Kubernetes and Docker containers. VMs load in less than 100 ms, making them suitable for on-the-fly deployment of computational resources in the cloud. Notably, several major IaaS providers are already involved in the development of Kata.<\/p>\n

The second project, Zuul, is a CI\/CD system. It conducts parallel testing of code modifications and prevents potential failures.<\/p>\n

Fund prospects.<\/b> At the OpenStack Foundation, they say that by changing their development direction, they will be able to strengthen the community with talented developers. However, not everyone agrees \u2014 at the May conference, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth called<\/a><\/noindex> called the fund's portfolio expansion a \"mistake.\" In his opinion, the OpenStack Foundation is inefficiently using its resources, which will ultimately affect the quality of its main product \u2014 the OpenStack cloud platform. Whether this will turn out to be true remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

What is the Linux Foundation engaged in<\/h2>\n

\nThe Foundation is working on<\/a><\/noindex> is focused on promoting and standardizing Linux, as well as developing the open-source software ecosystem as a whole. The fund's portfolio is regularly updated with new projects \u2014 some of which emerged just this week.<\/p>\n

What are these projects?<\/b> On June 25, it became part of the Linux Foundation. became<\/a><\/noindex> the FATE framework. It was handed over as open source by the Chinese bank WeBank and the company Tencent. The goal of this new solution is to help<\/a><\/noindex> companies develop secure artificial intelligence systems that meet GDPR requirements. It includes tools for implementing deep learning methods, logistic regression<\/a><\/noindex> and \"transfer learning<\/a><\/noindex>\" (in this case, a pre-trained model is adapted for solving other tasks). The project's source code can be found on GitHub<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

Also, at the beginning of the year, the Linux Foundation announced<\/a><\/noindex> launched the CommunityBridge platform. It serves as a bridge between developers and investors willing to sponsor open projects. The platform aims to attract new developers to the open source field.<\/p>\n

Despite this, it has already faced criticism. Industry experts note<\/a><\/noindex>argue that the Linux Foundation will provide only minimal financial services while issues such as contract agreements and licensing remain \"off the table.\" Perhaps, in the future, the functionality of CommunityBridge will be expanded.<\/p>\n

Fund prospects.<\/b> At the end of last year, the Linux Foundation established two new funds for GraphQL<\/noindex> and Ceph<\/a><\/noindex>. The organization's plans include continuing the development of the open source software ecosystem.<\/p>\n

For example, the Linux Foundation and Facebook plan<\/a><\/noindex> are opening a new fund dedicated to the osquery project. Osquery is a framework for monitoring operating systems, used by developers of the social network as well as companies like Airbnb, Netflix, and Uber. The tool allows optimizing the process of obtaining data on running processes, loaded kernel modules, and network connections.<\/p>\n

It is expected that in the near future the Linux Foundation will again expand its portfolio. Perhaps they are destined for the same success as the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which produced Kubernetes and CoreDNS. Or they may follow the uncertain path of the Tizen fund, whose prospects remain unclear due to unpopularity<\/a><\/noindex> of the eponymous operating system.<\/p>\n

Both funds\u2014OpenStack Foundation and Linux Foundation\u2014actively develop their own projects. We will continue to monitor their most interesting \"acquisitions.\" We will discuss some of them in upcoming materials.<\/i><\/p>\n
