\nLast week at the Intel Data Center Tech Summit, the company officially introduced Optane memory based on modules 3D XPoint<\/a><\/noindex> in the DIMM format, which is named Optane DC Persistent Memory (please do not confuse with Intel Optane Memory<\/a><\/noindex> \u2014 the consumer line of cache storage). <\/p>\n

The memory modules come in sizes of 128, 256, or 512 GB, with pinouts that conform to the DIMM standard; however, naturally, the hardware must support this type of memory \u2014 such support will appear in the next generation of Intel Xeon server platforms. As for software support for the product, there has been an Open Source project from Intel for quite some time now, Persistent Memory Development Kit<\/a><\/noindex> (PMDK, until the end of last year known as NVML).
\n<\/a><\/noindex>
\nUnfortunately, the presentation lacks technical details such as power consumption, frequency, etc. \u2014 we will await an update in ARK<\/a><\/noindex>. It is also unclear whether it will be possible to combine DRAM and Optane on the same memory controller channel. However, the newly introduced memory will soon be available for \"hands-on\" testing and measurements, although still remotely for now. This summer, internet testing of Optane DC Persistent Memory will be conducted \u2014 you can also become a participant , if you work at an Intel partner company (it's never too late to become one, by the way). For the testing, a server farm with 2-processor nodes, 256 GB of DRAM, and 1 TB of Persistent Memory will be provided.<\/a><\/noindex>Then, by the end of the year, deliveries of the memory will begin for selected projects. Broad sales are planned for early 2019. <\/p>\n
