Microsoft released<\/a><\/noindex> all changes and additions to the Linux kernel used in the kernel supplied for the WSL 2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux v2). The second edition of WSL differs<\/a><\/noindex> provides a full Linux kernel, instead of an emulator that translates Linux system calls into Windows system calls on the fly. The availability of source code allows enthusiasts to create their own Linux kernel builds for WSL2, taking into account the nuances of this platform. <\/p>\n

The Linux kernel supplied in WSL2 is based on version 4.19 and runs in a Windows environment using a virtual machine that is already utilized in Azure. Updates for the Linux kernel are delivered through Windows Update and are tested within Microsoft\u2019s continuous integration infrastructure. The prepared patches include optimizations to reduce kernel boot time, decrease memory consumption, and keep only the minimum necessary set of drivers and subsystems in the kernel.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Microsoft has applied<\/a><\/noindex> to be included in the closed mailing list linux-distros, which publishes information about new vulnerabilities at an early stage of their discovery, allowing distributions to prepare for fixes before public disclosure. Access to the mailing list is necessary for Microsoft to receive information about new vulnerabilities affecting distribution-like builds such as Azure Sphere, Windows Subsystem for Linux v2, and Azure HDInsight, which are not based on existing distributions.
