Introduced<\/a><\/noindex> project Waypipe<\/a><\/noindex>, which is is being developed<\/a><\/noindex> a proxy for the Wayland protocol, allowing applications to run on a different host. Waypipe facilitates the transmission to another host via a single network socket of Wayland messages and serialized changes in shared memory buffers and DMABUF.<\/p>\n

SSH can be used as a transport, similar to the built-in X11 forwarding in SSH (\"ssh -X\"). For example, to run the weston-terminal program from another host and display the interface on the current system, you simply need to execute the command \"waypipe ssh -C user@server weston-terminal\". Waypipe must be installed on both the client and server sides\u2014one instance acts as the Wayland server and the other as the Wayland client. <\/p>\n

The performance of Waypipe is considered sufficient for remote launching terminals and static applications such as Kwrite and LibreOffice over a local network. However, for graphic-intensive applications like computer games, Waypipe is currently not very applicable due to FPS drops of two times or more, caused by delays from sending data about the entire screen content over the network. To address this issue, there is an option for encoding the stream in video format
\nh264, but it is currently only applicable to linear DMABUF layouts (XRGB8888). For stream compression, ZStd or LZ4 can also be used.<\/p>\n
