\nIt may seem that there is nothing complicated about it.<\/p>\n

But! Even now, patients come for consultations and say, 'In another clinic, the doctor said...' They claim that such incredibly complicated teeth cannot be extracted outside of a hospital, in the jaw and facial surgery department, and certainly not without general anesthesia. Apparently, it is fraught with consequences.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the words 'hospital' and 'jaw and facial surgery' instill a sense of fear on the verge of panic in many patients, and after such statements, convincing them otherwise is extremely difficult.<\/p>\n

\nAfter such scare tactics, which I can\u2019t call anything else, many really go to the hospital, gather tests, agree to intubation anesthesia, and spend several days in wards, enjoying the local community, the attentive care of nurses, and hospital-acquired infections.<\/p>\n

At the same time, when I ask, 'How did they justify the need for tooth extraction exclusively in the jaw and facial surgery department?' I have never received a clear answer.<\/p>\n

The only thing usually said is, 'Well, they told me the tooth is complicated... it's deep... there's a nerve nearby...'. Yes, I can very well imagine that all this is true, and there is a nerve, and the socket is deep, but... what is fundamentally different in the technique of inpatient and outpatient extraction?<\/p>\n

\nExaminations?<\/p>\n

Well, a CT scan (3D volumetric image) can be done anywhere.<\/p>\n

For what?<\/p>\n

The orthopantomogram (OPTG, overview or panoramic image of teeth) is a flat image, meaning that each detail of the image overlaps layer by layer. Thus, it is impossible to examine the object of study, particularly the area of the wisdom tooth located near the inferior alveolar nerve, in all planes, from different angles or projections. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), on the contrary, gives us that opportunity.<\/p>\n

\nMaybe, in your jaw and facial surgery departments, there are specially trained doctors who possess the technique of non-invasive tooth extraction? Who, without incisions or any effort, can make an upper lateral incisor dissolve with just the power of thought?<\/p>\n

\nBut that's not the case either!<\/p>\n

Yet I keep asking: \"I suppose the tooth was removed quickly, and there were no issues?\" Damn! Even here I missed the mark.<\/p>\n

The average time for the removal of lower impacted wisdom teeth (those that are completely under the gum) in such facilities, according to patients, is about 2.5 hours. A couple of times I heard, just think about it, about 4(!) hours. Don\u2019t you think that\u2019s excessive? In that time, you could perform a sinus lift on both sides, place 8 implants, order lunch, and even have a nap. When I mention that \"in our clinic, the removal of such a tooth takes an average of 25-30 minutes, from anesthesia to stitches,\" many look at me in surprise, to put it mildly.<\/p>\n

I think that after spending 4 hours in the dentist\u2019s chair, especially of some professor adorned with accolades, you would hardly believe that all this could have been done \"a bit\" faster. And in a more friendly, calm, and comfortable atmosphere. Without unnecessary risks and worries.<\/p>\n

\nSo why are people sent to the maxillofacial surgery ward for wisdom tooth removal? Who does that?<\/b><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s who:<\/p>\n

\u2014 either the doctor does not know\/how to remove such teeth and wants to play it safe by referring you to another specialist (which is most likely)<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 or they want to rip you off.<\/b><\/p>\n

The first point is clear. If you can\u2019t do it, pass it on. That\u2019s fair.<\/p>\n

But what do money and \"rip-off\" have to do with it? Because you are paying for services that, as we have just established, are completely unnecessary:<\/p>\n

\u2014 the cost of spending days in the hospital is around 4,000 rubles. Depending on whether you have a private room, or you will spend several nights hearing the snoring of twenty other \"fortunate\" individuals with wisdom teeth.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n

If general anesthesia is needed, add the cost of a consultation with an anesthesiologist-resuscitator (about 1,500 rubles), the required laboratory tests (on average, 3,000 rubles), and the procedure for general anesthesia itself. At least two hours, but it can be longer. And this can cost you from 8,000 to 30,000 rubles.<\/p>\n

The surgical procedure itself is quite significant, isn't it? Typically, the removal of an impacted tooth costs between 14,000 and 23,000 rubles. We can assume that in a good hospital, the cost of removal will be comparable (not counting the room, anesthesia, tests, consultations, and sedation).<\/p>\n

Do you feel the difference? Is it a scam? They scare you, then shake you down for money. Quite a bit of money.<\/p>\n

Why did I write all this?<\/b><\/p>\n

I want to tell you, dear friends, that there are practically no wisdom teeth that cannot be removed outside of a hospital, during a regular outpatient appointment.<\/b> Spending at most forty minutes on a consultation, examination, and the procedure itself, you will solve the problem once and for all. In no time, you'll be back to your normal routine, able to handle your affairs without significantly interrupting your usual way of life. There's no need to take sick leave or hire a caregiver. Live your ordinary life, but with some minor post-operative recommendations, prescriptions, and check-ups.<\/p>\n
