Network document scanning exists on one hand, but on the other hand, it has not become a common practice, unlike network printing. Administrators still install drivers, and the setup for remote scanning is individualized for each scanner model. What technologies are currently available, and does such a scenario have a future?
\n<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

Installed driver or direct access<\/h2>\n

\nCurrently, there are four main types of drivers: TWAIN, ISIS, SANE, and WIA. Essentially, these drivers serve as an interface between the application and the vendor's low-level library, which connects to a specific model. <\/p>\n

\nSimplified architecture for connecting to the scanner<\/p>\n

It is usually assumed that the scanner is connected directly to the computer. However, there is no restriction on the protocol between the low-level library and the device. It can also be TCP\/IP. This is how most network multifunction devices currently operate: the scanner appears as local, but the connection goes through the network.<\/p>\n

The advantage of this solution is that the application does not care how the connection is made; it just needs to see the familiar TWAIN, ISIS, or other interfaces. There\u2019s no need to implement special support. <\/p>\n

But the downsides are evident. This solution is tied to desktop operating systems. Mobile devices are immediately excluded from support. Another downside is that drivers may operate unstably on complex infrastructures, such as terminal servers with thin clients. <\/p>\n

A way out of this situation would be to support direct connection to the scanner via HTTP\/RESTful protocol. <\/p>\n

TWAIN Direct<\/h3>\n

\nTWAIN Direct<\/a><\/noindex> was proposed by the TWAIN Working Group consortium as a driverless access option.<\/p>\n

\nTWAIN Direct<\/p>\n

The main idea is that all logic is transferred to the scanner side. The scanner provides access via REST API. Additionally, the specification includes a description of device publishing (autodiscovery). It looks promising. For administrators, this eliminates potential problems with drivers. It supports all devices, as long as there is a compatible application. For developers, there are also advantages, primarily a familiar interaction interface. The scanner acts as a web service. <\/p>\n

When considering real-world usage scenarios, there are also downsides. The first is a deadlock situation. There are no devices on the market with TWAIN Direct, and developers have no incentive to support this technology, and vice versa. The second is security; the specification does not impose requirements on user management or the frequency of updates to close potential vulnerabilities. It is also unclear how administrators can control updates and access. There is antivirus software on the computer. However, in the scanner's firmware, it may or may not be present. web server<\/a>Or it may exist, but not in the manner required by the company's security policy. Agree, having malware that sends all scanned documents to a third party is not ideal. Thus, when implementing this standard, the tasks that were handled by third-party application settings are shifted to the device manufacturers.<\/p>\n

The third drawback is the potential loss of functionality. Drivers may offer additional post-processing features like barcode recognition and background removal. Some scanners have what's called an imprinter \u2014 a function that allows the scanner to print on the processed document. This feature is not available in TWAIN Direct. The specification allows for API extensions, but this would lead to a myriad of proprietary implementations. <\/p>\n

And there's one more downside when working with the scanner. <\/p>\n

Scanning from an application or scanning from a device <\/h2>\n

\nLet's look at how regular scanning from an application works. I place the document down. Then I open the application and scan. After that, I take the document. Three steps. Now, imagine the network scanner is located in another room. At least 2 trips to it are required. This is less convenient than network printing. <\/p>\n

\nOn the other hand, when a scanner can send a document by itself, for example, to email. I place the document down. Then I scan. The document immediately flies into the target system. <\/p>\n

\nThis is the main difference. If the device is connected to the network, it is more convenient to scan directly into the target storage: a folder, email, or ECM system. In this scheme, there is no place for a driver. <\/p>\n

From a broader perspective, we are utilizing network scanning while not altering existing technologies. This is done both through desktop applications via drivers and directly from devices. However, remote scanning from a computer has not gained as much popularity as network printing due to differences in usage scenarios. Scanning directly to the desired storage is becoming more in demand.<\/p>\n

Supporting TWAIN Direct scanners as a replacement for drivers is indeed a wise decision. However, the standard is somewhat late to the party. Users want to scan directly from network devices, sending documents to their intended destinations. There is no need for existing applications to support the new standard, as everything is working perfectly well now, and scanner manufacturers have no incentive to implement it since there are no applications. <\/p>\n

In conclusion, the overall trend shows that simple scanning of one or two pages will be replaced by smartphone cameras. Industrial scanning will remain, where speed and support for post-processing features, which TWAIN Direct cannot provide, are critical, and where close integration with software will still be important.
