Building a telecommunications infrastructure is a complex task when there are no conditions, experience, or specialists available. However, in such cases, ready-made solutions like container data centers can be utilized. In this post, we discuss how the data center of Campana in Myanmar was created, which is now one of the main switching hubs in the region and connects underwater cables coming from different countries. When it comes to building a new data center, the client expects to receive the entire solution from a single provider and also wants assurances that everything will operate without issues.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In such cases, we use container data centers. They can be brought directly to the client's site and assembled in a short time, arranging the equipment according to pre-prepared schemes and taking advantage of initially planned solutions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Campana MYTHIC Co Ltd. is currently a major telecommunications operator in the region. In fact, it is the first private company in Myanmar to service international traffic, providing gateway support and signal transmission. (the key to connect to is specified, and iroh finds the associated host and establishes an encrypted connection using the QUIC protocol). Direct P2P connections are established whenever possible, but if not, it falls back to using relays, which are also employed for host discovery by keys. You can run your own relay or connect to public relays supported by the community.<\/a> and so on. Campana ensures a competitive connection between the internet ecosystems of Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia, as well as traffic exchange with India. The company needed a reliable data center that required minimal maintenance and could be established quickly. This is why the decision was made to use a ready-made infrastructure based on Delta solutions. <\/p>\n

Preparation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Since Myanmar did not have a sufficient number of specialists for testing and deploying the infrastructure, all preliminary work was conducted in China. The company's staff prepared all the equipment and performed not only its initial setup but also compatibility testing and the integration of the containers themselves. It would indeed be frustrating to bring the containers to another country only to face compatibility issues, missing fastening elements, or other inconveniences. For this, a test assembly of the container data center was conducted in Yangzhou. <\/p>\n

When the trailers with containers arrived in Myanmar (Yangon), they were unloaded and assembled on-site for permanent operation. A special column foundation was prepared for the installation of the containers to elevate the data center above ground level, while also allowing for ventilation from below. Testing, delivery, and installation of the structure took just 50 days \u2013 the time required to build the infrastructure on a nearly empty site. <\/p>\n

Fully equipped data center<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The Campana data center consists of 7 containers, which have been combined into three functional areas. The first room, made up of two connected containers, houses the CLS (Cable Landing Station). It contains the switching equipment that facilitates the routing of incoming and outgoing internet traffic.<\/p>\n

The second room, also composed of two containers, is the power supply room. Here, there are Delta distribution cabinets connected to 230 V and 400 V power networks, as well as uninterruptible power supplies that ensure autonomous operation for loads of up to 100 kW.<\/p>\n

The third room is designated for IT loads. Campana also provides Colocation services for clients in the region. As a result, those who colocate their loads in the new data center gain the fastest access to international traffic exchange channels. <\/p>\n

Equipment placement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

To cool the CLS cable station, five Delta RoomCool air conditioners, each with a capacity of 40 kW, were used. They were installed at different ends of the area to ensure effective air cooling for the switching equipment. The positioning scheme of the equipment in the CLS is as follows:<\/p>\n

Given the issues related to unstable power supply (which are typical for many regions), a substantial number of batteries were installed in the power zone: six 12V batteries at 100 A*hr, as well as 84 batteries at 200 A*hr and 144 batteries with a voltage of 2V and a capacity of 3000 A*hr. Distribution systems are installed in the center of the room, while the edges are lined with batteries and uninterruptible power supplies.<\/p>\n

The server equipment room is divided into two zones, between which the same RoomCool air conditioning units with a capacity of 40 kW, as in CLS, are installed. At the initial stage, the Campana data center requires only two air conditioners; however, as new server racks are added, their number can be increased without changing the layout of the hall. <\/p>\n

Delta InfraSuite software is used to manage the entire complex, allowing operators to monitor the temperature of each equipment rack as well as the changes in power consumption parameters. <\/p>\n

Result<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

In less than two months, a data center was built from containers in Myanmar, which currently serves as the main traffic exchange venue in the country. Given that we are talking about a country with a hot climate, where concepts like free cooling are almost pointless, we managed to achieve a PUE (Power Usage Efficiency) rating of 1.43. This was primarily made possible due to adaptive cooling for all types of loads. Additionally, the presence of integrated ventilation systems allowed for the regulation of cold air supply and hot air removal within the premises.<\/p>\n

A similar container data center can be created in any other region, including Russia. However, for the central and northern regions, the PUE level may be even lower due to the cooler ambient air.<\/p>\n

The typical design of a modular data center in a container implies the placement of similar loads and power systems, as well as the ability to accommodate IT systems with a capacity of up to 75 kW per container \u2014 that is, up to 9 full racks. Currently, Delta container data centers can meet Tier II or Tier III requirements and can be accompanied by a room with generators and a fuel supply for 8\u201312 hours of operation. Versions with anti-vandal protection are available for installation in remote areas, which do not require any external infrastructure other than incoming cables.<\/p>\n
