A month ago, Apple became a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Let's explore what this means.<\/p>\n

Why CNCF<\/h2>\n

\nThe Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) supports the Linux Foundation. Its goal is to develop and promote cloud technologies. Founded in 2015 by major IaaS and SaaS providers, IT companies, and network equipment manufacturers \u2014 Google, Red Hat, VMware, Cisco, Intel, Docker, and others.<\/p>\n

Today, members of the foundation include organizations like Adidas, GitHub, and The New York Times. A month ago, Apple joined them \u2014 it received platinum status and will contribute<\/a><\/noindex> 370,000 dollars annually to the development of open projects.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nApple has a long history with open source projects. The corporation was one of the first<\/a><\/noindex> to actively use open-source software in product development. An example is OS X. This operating system is based on components from another OS \u2014 Darwin. It combined<\/a><\/noindex> code written by Apple with that obtained from NeXTSTEP and FreeBSD.<\/p>\n

Representatives of CNCF and the Linux Foundation say<\/a><\/noindex>, that by joining the open foundation, the 'Apple company' aims to share its expertise. Engineers want to give back to the open source community for its efforts and support the development of cloud IT infrastructure. Apple representatives, as is their custom, do not comment on the corporation's decisions.<\/p>\n

What will this affect<\/h2>\n

\nCloud development will accelerate.<\/b> Notable projects that emerged from CNCF include the Kubernetes container orchestration system, the Prometheus infrastructure monitoring tool, the CoreDNS server, and the Envoy proxy service. Even before joining CNCF, Apple was actively involved in their development (specifically, Kubernetes).<\/p>\n

By becoming a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, the corporation will be able to communicate more closely with its colleagues. Thanks to its platinum status, the opinions of Apple representatives will be considered in determining the direction of cloud tools development. Currently, CNCF is working on fifteen more projects to protect production environments and files in the cloud, as well as for messaging. Apple's expertise may accelerate their development.<\/p>\n

There will be more open projects.<\/b> Apple will assist in the development of existing projects and introduce new ones. The company has already contributed to open source. \nIn just a couple of weeks, the project attracted the interest of<\/a><\/noindex> over seven thousand developers, and on the forum dozens of<\/a><\/noindex> new threads were opened. The company plans to continue developing new open tools together with the community.<\/p>\n

Who has recently joined the CNCF<\/h2>\n

\nIn March of this year, representatives of the CNCF announced<\/a><\/noindex>announced that 59 new organizations have joined the community. By the end of May, the number of participants in the foundation surpassed the mark of<\/a><\/noindex> 400 companies. Among them are both small startups and large IT companies.<\/p>\n

For example, Nvidia became a new member of the foundation, which will focus on developing artificial intelligence systems in the cloud environment. Notably, there\u2019s Elastic \u2014 the developers of the stack made up of Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, and Logstash \u2014 as well as the telecommunications equipment manufacturer Ericsson.<\/p>\n

In addition to these organizations, the list includes several cloud providers, internet service providers, consulting agencies, integrators, and companies in the field of information security.<\/p>\n

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation is convinced that the new participants and their technologies will contribute to the development of the cloud market and bring valuable expertise to the open-source software ecosystem.<\/p>\n
