No, it's not the ability to recall at any moment the number of messages that manager Igor sent to colleague Maria yesterday. A good security professional strives to identify potential breaches in advance and intercept them in real-time, exerting all efforts to prevent the continuation of an incident. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems significantly simplify the task of quickly detecting and blocking any attempts at breaches.
<noindex></noindex>
Traditionally, SIEM systems combine information security management and security event management systems. A key feature of these systems is the real-time analysis of security events, allowing for responses before any existing damage occurs.

The main tasks of SIEM systems:

Data collection and normalization

Data correlation

Alerting

Visualization dashboards

Data storage organization

Data search and analysis

Reporting

Reasons for the high demand for SIEM systems

Recently, the complexity and coordination of attacks on information systems have increased significantly. At the same time, the complexity of the applied set of information protection measures has also increased, including network and host intrusion detection systems, DLP systems, antivirus systems, firewalls, vulnerability scanners, and more. Each protection measure generates a stream of events with varying levels of detail, and often, an attack can only be seen by overlaying events from different systems.

A lot has been written <noindex>about various commercial SIEM systems</noindex>, but we offer a brief overview of free full-fledged open-source SIEM systems that have no artificial limitations on the number of users or the volumes of stored data, are easily scalable, and well-supported. We hope this helps assess the potential of such systems and makes it easier to decide whether to integrate these solutions into the company's business processes.

AlienVault OSSIM

AlienVault OSSIM is the open-source version of AlienVault USM, one of the leading commercial SIEM systems.
