At the end of last year, Microsoft decided to replace its rendering engine EdgeHTML with the more widely used Chromium. The reasons for this included the higher speed of the latter, support for various browsers, rapid updates, and so on. Interestingly, the ability to update the browser independently of Windows became one of the decisive factors.<\/p>\n

According to data<\/a><\/noindex> Researchers from Duo noted that the 'classic' Edge has often lagged behind other browsers in terms of updates. Interestingly, the morally and technically outdated Internet Explorer was one of the most frequently updated products.  <\/p>\n

Researchers point out that in 2018, Microsoft Edge ranked fifth in terms of update 'lag.' Now it has moved to first place. It is believed that this shift occurred due to the development of the new Edge, where all efforts were concentrated, while the classic browser receives only minimal support.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the classic Microsoft Edge was tightly integrated into the system and required Windows 10 for installation. The new version is not as strongly tied to the OS. It can operate on 'ten,' as well as on Windows 7, 8.1, and even macOS. This means that using the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge automatically broadens the browser's ecosystem and allows it to attract new fans.<\/p>\n

And although there is currently no information on whether a new version of the browser for Linux is in development, its appearance would be quite expected. Considering Microsoft's interest in open source, this would be a logical step.<\/p>\n
