Before this, I had various freelance projects with clients from around the world. I began my journey in graphic design at the Gazprom-Media holding in the radio stations division. There, I worked on outdoor advertising, print, banner design, promotional products, branding, corporate identity, etc. I have personally navigated the pathway from graphic design to product design, and today I'm excited to share with you what I have learned during this transition.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is a product designer and what do they do?<\/h2>\n<p>\nA product designer \u2014 who are they? Someone who designs milk, bread, or cookies? Or someone who creates furniture and interior items? Or Jony Ive, who left Apple and created gadgets and devices beloved by many?<\/p>\n<p>About seven years ago, product designers were referred to as those creating physical items, furniture, and shapes. Today, in my opinion, this definition has been irrevocably taken from the founders.<\/p>\n<p>Modern product design is about digital, about websites and applications, about digital products.<\/p>\n<p>So, a product designer is not just a designer who creates the visual part of a project but also thinks about how this project will function and interact with users. This means that in a product, it is not enough to just create something beautifully; it must work beautifully and solve specific tasks, meeting the needs of the user and the business, ideally both.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the main challenges of product design: how to create a user-friendly interface that is visually appealing and generates revenue for the business.<\/p>\n<p>A product designer influences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Visual language.<\/b> The product designer decides whether to communicate with the client in a relaxed, strict, or perhaps even a slightly aggressive manner. The product designer determines the colors, fonts, shapes, and spaces in the interface.<\/li>\n<li><b>User experience (UX)<\/b>. The product designer determines what happens when a button, link, or text input is clicked. What the client will see while waiting for a load, or when something in the application breaks.<\/li>\n<li><b>Brand<\/b>. Yes, by creating interfaces, the designer affects the brand and how users perceive it. By creating a complex and inconvenient interaction scenario, we can make users less loyal to the brand or even turn away from it altogether. So this is very important!<\/li>\n<li><b>Metrics<\/b>. If a business wants to increase profits by increasing the number of target actions, it is up to the product designer (as one of the specialists, since not only the product designer can influence this). If there's a need to keep the user on the page or prompt them to take action, this can all be achieved through design.<\/li>\n<li><b>Business strategy.<\/b> When a business is moving in a certain direction and is confident about something, product design can help change the strategy by proving that previous steps were wrong and incorrect. For example, consider a landing page with a conditional loan offer; the client goes there not just for money, but for a specific purpose: buying a car, an apartment, or planning a vacation, etc. If you, as a product designer, can identify the client\u2019s true need and prove it to the business, you can influence the overall strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nIn conclusion, let's reinforce that product design isn\u2019t just about beautiful interfaces. It\u2019s about beautiful interfaces that work and solve user problems.<\/p>\n<h2>Do I really need this? And who definitely won\u2019t benefit from it?<\/h2>\n<p>\nTo understand why you need to become a product designer, let's explore why this profession is so popular today. Product designers are in demand everywhere, and more and more companies are seeking them. Despite a saturated market, companies continue to look for product designers.<\/p>\n<p>This is due to businesses realizing that design truly impacts the product. Design can elevate a product that no one uses and that fails to cover its costs. Modern companies are investing heavily in design, trying to find those who can create interfaces that generate millions.<\/p>\n<p>How do I understand that I need to develop into product design? Graphic design is a very interesting and creative field. You can tackle various problems using numerous tools, experiment, and create something new. However, the lifespan of graphic design projects is relatively short, and the scope of influence on the end user is not always significant. Of course, there are major projects that change the world, but more often you'll have to settle for less.<\/p>\n<p>When should you consider transitioning to product design:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>When you realize you want to influence more processes than just creating beautiful images.<\/li>\n<li>When logic and reason dominate your design approach.<\/li>\n<li>When you want to work not just with your hands, but also with your mind, thinking about all stages of your product's lifecycle.<\/li>\n<li>When you feel tired of graphic design and want to switch to something new.<\/li>\n<li>When technology and IT spark more interest for you than print media and outdoor advertising.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nBut here\u2019s who product design might not be a good fit for:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Creative souls and artists who engage in art and do it well. You might feel uncomfortable in product design. However, it\u2019s always worth a try.<\/li>\n<li>People who believe that beautiful images are the only product of design. I'm not sure such individuals exist, though. Design in any direction has long primarily aimed to solve problems, and only then to bring beauty.<\/li>\n<li>For solo workers who struggle to collaborate. It's all clear here. Working on a product is always a team effort, and if you lack this skill, it's better to develop it if you truly want to engage in product design.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>What current skills are particularly important and what should you enhance?<\/h2>\n<p>\nNow let's step away from the discussions and create your skills map. A skills map helps you clearly understand what your strengths are and what needs improvement. Skills maps are often used in product teams to identify growth areas for designers. We'll create your personal maps together. There are various assessment options; we'll try to evaluate the skills on our own. To make this data more relevant, you can ask other designers you interact with or a manager you work with to evaluate your skills.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we have the skills map, let's highlight which of your current skills are particularly important and will greatly assist you in product design.<\/p>\n<p>So, it's very important to have a grasp of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Composition<\/b>. The theory of proximity, space and interaction of elements in space, the combination of small and large. Without knowledge of composition rules, one can make foolish mistakes that degrade the quality of user interaction with the product, and can often affect more important metrics, such as profit.<\/li>\n<li><b>Typography<\/b>. Modern interfaces are not just visual, but also textual. Working with text must be competent so that users can accomplish their tasks and read text on different screens. It is important to choose and combine fonts correctly for the interface.<\/li>\n<li><b>Working with color<\/b>. Understanding how to work with color is also important, as, for example, violating contrast principles can render text unreadable on certain screens, or make elements undetectable. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nIn other words, without basic principles and skills in graphic design, it will be difficult to work on the product, and many ridiculous mistakes can be made.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let's discuss what skills need to be developed in order to work with the product:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Empathy<\/b>. This is perhaps one of the main skills. Do not confuse empathy with sympathy. Empathy is the ability to view the product through the user's eyes. It is the extent to which you can detach yourself from your product, look at it coolly, and see how users interact with it. Developing empathy allows a designer to objectively assess the product and its solutions to understand what can be improved, rather than pushing a 'favorite solution.'<\/li>\n<li><b>Logical thinking<\/b>. This skill also requires continuous development and refinement, as it enables you to create truly thoughtful interfaces with a good user experience.<\/li>\n<li><b>UX patterns<\/b>. Modern products are sets of certain patterns that users have become accustomed to. For instance, we already know that when opening a photo in a social network, we can swipe down to close it. Or by swiping left, we will see additional options or deletion. We understand that by double-tapping on an image, we can zoom in, and so on. Such patterns are becoming more numerous, and it is crucial to understand how they work and not to break them. For example, imagine if the scrolling on your phone suddenly inverted, and instead of the usual swipe from bottom to top, it now scrolls from top to bottom. As users, you would need some time to adjust to the new pattern, which would cause certain irritation and frustration.<\/li>\n<li><b>Copywriting<\/b>. As I mentioned, text is important. It's not only about how it looks but also about how it is written. The ideal scenario is when a copywriter works alongside a designer to refine all the texts. However, this is often not the case, and the designer has to write the texts themselves. And that can be challenging. That\u2019s why it's vital to continuously enhance this skill, improving your texts and making them relevant to the product.<\/li>\n<li><b>Working with analytics<\/b>. Understanding what analytics is and why it's necessary is essential because all decisions need to be validated and verified somehow. This is done through metrics. Designers do not necessarily need to understand how metrics are attached, but being able to generate the right metrics and understanding what is being verified with them is truly important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThis is just a basic set required to start creating not only beautiful but also useful interfaces that will solve real problems. You might have more skills on your competency map, but it's also very useful to prioritize, focusing first on developing only the most necessary skills and then improving others.<\/p>\n<h2>How can one improve?<\/h2>\n<p>\nIt's very important to be honest with yourself and to give a realistic assessment on your competency map without inflating it (for this, I recommend involving fellow designers or managers). Only then can you identify the skills that truly need improvement. But it's also important not to neglect those skills where you are already quite strong.<\/p>\n<p>Let's talk about how to improve your declining skills and what you should do about it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Analyze all the interfaces you encounter. From everyday transportation and navigation apps you use, to apps that you open quite rarely. It would also be good to think about why you open certain apps infrequently and what can be done to increase their usage. Additionally, reflect on what is convenient in a specific app and what is not. What would you change?<\/li>\n<li>Constantly enhance your visual awareness. This will enable you to generate more solutions and have more patterns in your mind. You should work on your visual awareness daily, and there are many ways to do this: you can browse Pinterest, create boards with your favorite ideas. Dribbble is also good for developing visual awareness. However, it is worth noting that Dribbble is more about the visual aspect of how an interface looks, rather than how it works. But you can still find interesting UX solutions there.<\/li>\n<li>To improve your UI skills, you can start by copying interfaces. For example, take Facebook and simply redraw several screens. But do not do this mindlessly; delve into and analyze why a particular element is positioned in a specific place.<\/li>\n<li>If you find that copying has become boring, start redesigning interfaces. Think about how certain features can be improved\u2014maybe switch elements around, write different text, or even completely repaint everything\u2014and implement it. Always try to answer the question: why? Why is the button here, why this color, why does the interaction happen this way, why does the interface work like this, etc. Try to dive deeper with your 'whys.'<\/li>\n<li>And the last piece of advice is constant practice. Without it, skills will fade, and for those who want to transition to product work, this is definitely not needed. Practice, experiment, create your own interfaces. For those who feel confident enough, I recommend the 100 Days of UI Challenge. <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyui.co\">www.dailyui.co<\/a><\/noindex> By starting this challenge, you will receive a daily email with a topic for which you need to design an interface. For example, 'Sending an email', or 'Shopping cart', or even 'Calculator'. This will help you enhance your UI skills, and if you think logically while working on the challenge, you'll also improve your UX skills.<\/li>\n<li>Read a lot. Read articles, books, and study user cases. Behance can help here, as designers often describe their solutions and explain how they arrived at certain conclusions. This will help develop logical thinking and establish causal connections in your interfaces.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nNow let's discuss the most common mistakes beginners make:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Irregularity. Reviewing interface patterns once a week is not enough. This should be done every day.<\/li>\n<li>Copying poor interfaces. It\u2019s important to note that you shouldn\u2019t copy everything indiscriminately. Often, you can find weak and poorly thought-out applications in stores. Copying such designs will not enhance your skills but rather hinder your progress.<\/li>\n<li>Ignoring improvement advice. The best effects will only come if you do everything in combination.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>How to create your first product portfolio<\/h2>\n<p>\nFor a designer, finding a job without a portfolio is not just difficult; it\u2019s nearly impossible. But what should you do if you have a graphic design portfolio but absolutely no product projects?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you can do to create your first product portfolio:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just like in any other type of design, you can create projects for fictional clients. Alternatively, you can propose redesigns of already well-known major products, such as Facebook, Instagram, email services, and similar. There are many examples where individuals who created such work received offers from the companies for which they did the redesign.<\/li>\n<li>You can confidently include works from the challenge you completed previously in your portfolio. But only the best works! Don\u2019t just insert 100 pictures from the 100 Days of UI challenge simply because you completed it from start to finish. It\u2019s much better to select a few special pieces that you can truly be proud of.<\/li>\n<li>It's important to remember that a portfolio, like a living organism, must continuously evolve and improve. When you realize that you've created a project that can easily overshadow your current work, bravely change it! Quality matters more than quantity. One or two excellent pieces can easily replace five or more mediocre ones.<\/li>\n<li>If you decide to showcase a product, it's essential not only to display beautiful images but also to explain the process behind them. For instance, if you chose a specific font, provide an explanation for why you chose that one. Clarify your color choice and behavioral patterns. Attending free webinars can definitely help you, but it doesn't replace interaction with an instructor, doing homework, and systematizing knowledge. For example, GeekBrains offers a course called 'Basics of Product Design' that will provide you with the essential knowledge needed to work in product design.<\/p>\n<p>Freelancing will also benefit you. With that first product portfolio you created, you can confidently seek real clients and work on actual projects. After that, your applications might appear in stores (which is a great recommendation for your portfolio), you'll have working websites to link to, plus real work experience.<\/p>\n<p>Another good practice is to intern at a modern company working on products. Many IT companies, banks, and others are willing to hire interns whom they may later employ. It's a great opportunity to showcase your skills, set goals, and achieve them.<\/p>\n<p>Don't forget about conferences and meetups. There are always some meetups on product design happening online, where you can listen to folks working on the product and note something new for yourself.
