Canonical has announced<\/a><\/noindex> the ability to install the distribution in Ubuntu 19.10 using the ZFS file system on the root partition. The implementation is based on the use of the project ZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>, which is supplied as a module for the Linux kernel and has been included in the standard distribution of the kernel package since Ubuntu 16.04. <\/p>\n

In Ubuntu 19.10, the support for ZFS will be updated to version 0.8.1<\/a><\/noindex>, and the desktop edition installer will include an experimental option to apply ZFS for all partitions, including the root. Corresponding changes will be made to GRUB, including an option in the boot menu to roll back changes using ZFS snapshots. <\/p>\n

To manage ZFS, a new daemon is under development zsys<\/a><\/noindex>, which will allow running multiple parallel systems with ZFS on one computer, automate the creation of snapshots, and manage the separation of system and user session data. The main idea is that different snapshots can contain various system states, allowing you to switch between them. For example, in case of issues after updates, you can revert to an old stable state by selecting a previous snapshot. Snapshots will also be used for transparent automatic backups of user data.<\/p>\n
