Studies on the compromise of the Tor network primarily focus on censorship (blocking access to Tor), identifying requests through Tor in transit traffic, and analyzing traffic flow correlation before the entry node and after the exit node of Tor for user de-anonymization. The presented study shows that organizing DoS attacks on Tor is often overlooked and, with costs of a few thousand dollars per month, it is quite feasible to create conditions that disrupt the normal operation of Tor, potentially forcing users to cease using Tor due to poor performance.

The researchers proposed three scenarios for conducting DoS attacks: creating bottlenecks between bridge nodes, load imbalance, and creating bottlenecks between relays, which require the attacker to have bandwidth of 30, 5, and 3 Gbit/s, respectively. In monetary terms, the cost of conducting an attack over a month would amount to $17, $2.8, and $1.6 thousand, respectively. In comparison, launching a direct DDoS attack to disrupt Tor would require a bandwidth of 512.73 Gbit/s and would cost $7.2 million per month.

The first method, costing $17 thousand per month, through flooding a limited set of bridge nodes at a rate of 30 Gbit/s, will reduce the data download speed for clients by 44%. During testing, only 12 out of 38 obfs4 bridge nodes (not listed in public directories and used to bypass the blocking of guard nodes) remained operational, allowing selective flooding of the remaining working bridge nodes. Tor developers can double their maintenance costs and restore functionality to the missing nodes, but the attacker just needs to increase their costs to $31 thousand per month to target all 38 bridge nodes. servers The attacker will only need to increase their expenses to $31 thousand per month to conduct an attack on all 38 bridge nodes.

The second method, requiring 5 Gbit/s for an attack, is based on disrupting the centralized bandwidth measurement system TorFlow, which allows reducing the average data download speed for clients by 80%. TorFlow is used for load balancing, enabling the disruption of traffic distribution during the attack and forcing it through a limited number of servers, resulting in their overload.

The third method, which requires only 3 Gbit/s, is based on using a modified Tor client to create parasitic load, allowing for a 47% reduction in client download speeds at a cost of $1,600 per month. By increasing the attack cost to $6,300, a 120% reduction in client download speeds can be achieved. The modified client applies an acceptable protocol chain of 8 nodes with the maximum number of hops between nodes instead of the standard three-node chain (entry, intermediate, and exit nodes), then requests the download of large files and pauses read operations after sending requests, but continues to send SENDME control commands instructing the entry nodes to continue data transmission.

It is noted that initiating a denial of service is significantly more effective than organizing a Sybil DoS attack at similar costs. The Sybil method involves deploying a large number of one's own relays in the Tor network, which can drop chains or throttle bandwidth. With an attack budget of 30, 5, and 3 Gbit/s, the Sybil method can achieve a performance reduction of 32%, 7.2%, and 4.5% for exit nodes, respectively. In contrast, the proposed DoS attacks cover all nodes.

When comparing costs with other attack types, conducting a user deanonymization attack with a budget of 30 Gbit/s will allow control over 21% of incoming and 5.3% of outgoing nodes, achieving coverage of all chain nodes in 1.1% of cases. For budgets of 5 and 3 Gbit/s, the effectiveness will be 0.06% (4.5% incoming, 1.2% outgoing nodes) and 0.02% (2.8% incoming, 0.8% outgoing nodes), respectively.

<noindex><a rel="nofollow"
