Thanks to the open-source Chromium code, Microsoft has had<\/a><\/noindex> its first serious and positive influence on the Google Chrome browser. It is reported that the new feature aims to address a long-standing issue with Chrome. It pertains to its 'greediness' regarding laptop battery consumption.<\/p>\n

As stated by Shawn Pickett from Microsoft, media content is cached to disk during download and playback. This increases overall power consumption. It is expected that the abandonment of caching will reduce power consumption on laptops and tablets running Windows. Given that online video and music are in high demand right now, this innovation should significantly help reduce the burden on the battery.<\/p>\n

As noted, Microsoft had previously experimented with optimizations for the classic Microsoft Edge browser. And it worked because the web browser was indeed good in terms of power consumption. Now these capabilities will also be available in Chrome and other browsers based on it.<\/p>\n

So far, the new feature is being tested in Chrome Canary 78. To activate it, you need to go to the flags list chrome:\/\/flags, find the flag 'Turn off caching of streaming media to disk', and disable it, after which you need to restart the browser. This works for versions on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, and Android.<\/p>\n

There is currently no information on when this innovation will be released, but it is likely to happen soon.<\/p>\n
