Linus Torvalds has released the sixth weekly test version of the upcoming Linux kernel 5.3. This release coincides with the 28th anniversary of the original version of this new operating system.

"The

Torvalds rephrased his first announcement on this topic. Here’s how it goes:

«I am creating a (free) operating system (it's more than just a hobby) for 486 AT clones and many other hardware solutions. This has been in the making for the past 28 years, and it still isn't done. I would appreciate feedback on any bugs presented in this release (or older bugs, for that matter)», — wrote the developer.

Most of the 5.3-rc6 patch consists of updates for network device drivers, although there are other fixes as well. Torvalds noted that the release of RC8 is not ruled out. As for the stable release, Linux 5.3 is expected in two or three weeks.

Recall that Torvalds made the first release of version 0.0.1 on August 25, 1991, after five months of development. The first public version of the kernel contained about 10,000 lines of source code and was 62 KB when compressed. The modern Linux kernel boasts over 26 million lines of code.

As noted, the rough development cost of such a project from scratch would range from $1 billion to $3 billion.
