A man accused of murdering his girlfriend in southeastern China was caught after facial recognition software suggested he was attempting to scan the corpse's face to apply for credit. Fujian province police reported that the 29-year-old suspect named Zhang was apprehended while trying to burn the body on a remote farm. Officers were alerted by a company that issues online loans: the system detected no signs of movement in the victim's eyes and flagged it.<\/p>\n

Zhang is accused of strangling his girlfriend with a rope in Xiamen on April 11 after the couple had a dispute over money, during which the woman threatened to leave him. He allegedly went on the run with the body hidden in the trunk of a rental car. Zhang is also accused of pretending to be the victim and contacting her employers through her WeChat account to arrange for a leave of absence.<\/p>\n

When the suspect returned to his hometown of Sanming the next day, police received a report that he was attempting to apply for credit using an app called Money Station. This app uses a neural network to verify the identity of applicants, asking them to wink during the identification process. Lender staff contacted the police after a manual check of the suspicious application revealed bruises on the woman's face and a thick red mark on her neck.<\/p>\n

Voice recognition software also revealed that the credit application was made by a man, not a woman. Zhang, whose formal arrest was approved by the prosecutor's office this month, is also accused of using the victim's phone to withdraw 30,000 yuan (about $4,200) from her bank account and deceiving the deceased's parents by telling them that the woman had gone away for a few days to relax.<\/p>\n

Although the date of the trial has not yet been announced, the details of the case have already shocked many in China. Some social media users suggested that the plot is too horrifying and resembles more of a thriller (if not a dark comedy), while another wrote, «I never imagined that facial recognition could be used in this way.»<\/p>\n
