What do you think of him? A sweetie and a darling? A tyrant? A true leader? A complete nerd? A clueless idiot? Oh God, what a man!

I counted – I've had twenty bosses in my life. Among them were department heads, deputy directors, general directors, and business owners. Naturally, each of them can be described in a certain way, not always polite. Some have soared to great heights, while others have fallen. Some might even be in prison.

Out of these twenty people, I am only sincerely grateful to thirteen. Because they are the Goats. Yes, with a capital G.<noindex></noindex>

A Goat is a boss who keeps things interesting. He constantly sets new goals, raises plans, pushes you to move, and doesn’t let you relax. A Goat continuously applies pressure. And under this pressure, you grow stronger.

There were also non-Goats, great guys. I counted seven of them. Such bosses are like Brezhnev. Under their leadership, you experience a complete standstill. You're not growing, not reaching heights, not moving up the career ladder, and not increasing your income.

Working with non-Goats is like a dream. You join a company, leave a couple of years later – and it feels like you never worked at all. Your qualifications don’t improve, there were no interesting projects, and you didn’t even have any arguments with anyone. As Makarevich sang, 'his life resembles fruit kefir.'

It's very easy to determine if your boss is a Goat or not. If you're not growing in measurable indicators, then he’s not a Goat. However, if your output, sales, number or speed of project completions, position, salary, or influence are constantly increasing, then your boss is a Goat.

There’s an interesting story about Goats. While working with a Goat, you hate him because he disrupts your homeostasis, i.e., your desire for calm. You arrive in the morning, pour yourself some coffee, and prepare to code peacefully, and then boom, here comes that Goat, with some hellish task. You just think – what a Goat!

But when you leave a Goat, especially for another company, you realize how much that person helped you. Especially if you move under the leadership of some sweetheart. You understand how great it was to strive for something, run, fall, get back up, and keep running. The Goat pressured you, but you didn’t break, and you became stronger.

For example, under the pressure of one goat, I single-handedly migrated a factory from 1C 7.7 to UPP in two months. Under the pressure of another goat, I passed five 1C certifications in the first year of my work in the franchise: 1C: Specialist, and 1C: Project Manager for dessert. The certifications were in-person and on-site, and I didn't miss a single one because the goat insisted on it. There was a goat who forced me to write an incredibly cool production planning system in a week, while with his predecessor, who wasn't a goat, I struggled for six months. The most powerful goats made me bring order to inventory management, procurement, and accounting.

If you’re lucky, you’ll encounter a Mega Goat in your life. I had one such boss.
An ordinary goat sets a goal and demands its achievement. A Mega Goat adds a condition – to achieve the goal in a specific way, using particular methods. For example, not just to complete a project, but to do it using Scrum. To establish relationships between two departments, but not through regulations and automation, but through boundary management methods.
Of course, it’s impossible to use a methodology you don’t know. You have to study. Moreover, in the end, you know it better than the Mega Goat – he only read the book and didn’t apply it in practice. But the Mega Goat is the Mega Goat. When the goal is achieved, and you decide to relax, he calls you and forces you to systematize your experience, talk about the practical application of methods, conduct some seminar, write an article for the corporate portal, etc.

The Mega Goat makes you constantly learn. He literally, and I mean literally, handed you a book or lectures, and then conducted an exam in the form of a personal interview. Several years have passed, and I can still recall what SSGR, CGR, NPV are, how many leadership models there are according to Goleman, who Eric Trist is, why Taylor is better than Mayo, where that damn gorilla is and why no one saw it, I can name the personality types according to Belbin, explain the secret of the success of Morning Star, and why, in fact, Diesel Gate happened at Volkswagen.

MegaGoat is definitely better than Goat. But there aren't many MegaGoats. I've only met one in my life. Oh, yes, when I was the head of programmers at a factory, I was also a MegaGoat for them. I brought books, demanded they read them, and then interviewed them. I made them analyze their own work, explain successes and failures in terms of management methodologies, rather than just saying, 'Well, it worked out, what else do you need?'

So if your boss is a Goat, be glad. The more of a Goat they are, the faster and better you develop. And don’t be upset if you’re led by a nice guy.

In that case, there’s a workaround – a Goat on the side, at least professionally. Sometimes such people are called coaches or mentors, but that’s not quite it – they won’t tell you the truth, so they won’t create the necessary pressure. And without pressure, you won’t begin to resist.

For example, if you’re a programmer, find another programmer who will criticize your code. Someone who will tell you to your face that you’re a hands-off terrible coder. You won’t say that to yourself, and the client won’t get it; even the project manager won’t dig in. A Goat won’t be shy about it.

Let the Goat constantly irritate you, keep you on your toes, and not let you relax. The more diverse the topics on which the Goat can skillfully criticize you, the better. Your position and experience don’t really matter. The aforementioned MegaGoat, a very wealthy person, wasn't shy about taking a bucket of criticism on his head from me. That’s why he constantly changed, developed, and moved forward.

And if you’re really lucky, you’ll turn into the SelfGoat and stop depending on external pressure. You’ll set goals for yourself, won’t let yourself relax, and will push yourself. Even if the external environment, even if it’s Goat-like, suits you perfectly.
SelfGoat can irritate even the Goats who lead him. Because he’s never satisfied with anything. Not enough pay, not enough pressure. He literally goes to his Goat and says, 'Let me take on this as well, and I need a higher plan, and in general, you’re not really Goat enough. Come on, lower your horns and push me.'

If you are a leader, consider whether you're a nice guy or not. It is very easy to be liked, I know, I have tried. Everyone treats you well, they respect you, maybe even love you; you are not demanding, you always help, find solutions, relieve difficulties, support with words and actions, forgive mistakes, and protect against higher-ups who might be harsh.

But, to be honest and sincere, you do this not for people, but for yourself. You want comfort for yourself. It's convenient when people love you, everything is smooth, calm, without crises. You enjoy life.

The trouble is that your people do not grow while you are the nice guy. You understand this, but you close your eyes. You think that those who want to grow will do it themselves. And you will help if they ask. But they won't ask because there’s no reason to. There's no pressure. There’s no harshness. You all sit together in warm fruit yogurt and then part ways without any advancement.

The reason for the desire for comfort is the same – homeostasis. This is the system's ability to self-regulate and maintain internal stability through simple actions. It is the desire to stay in the comfort zone, expending less energy.

Moreover, this desire exists for both employees and managers. It manifests in various ways and is known by many names. For instance, not rocking the boat, avoiding turbulence, balancing tasks on three pins, letting things slide, etc.

The gross part is that homeostasis is ingrained in humans by nature, in both physiological terms and in terms of knowledge development, skill acquisition, achieving goals, etc. Maintaining the current state of affairs is generally easier than getting up and moving somewhere.

This is where a harsh approach helps. The individual or employee cannot and does not want to cross the threshold where growth begins. External pressure aids, forces, and motivates them in this regard.

From this follows a simple formula: make it more comfortable to grow than to lounge around doing nothing.

Roughly speaking, shift the center, the objective of homeostasis. Let the natural mechanism preserve a state of movement, not a state of rest. Make rest uncomfortable. Like in that wonderful song from the Soviet era – "Fatigue is forgotten, the sun is shining, and once again the hooves, like hearts, beat, and we have no peace, let it burn, but live…".

Checking the action of the 'movement homeostasis' is not difficult. Let me provide a couple of examples.
If you have ever engaged in any sport or fitness regularly, you probably confirm: once you miss a workout, you feel uncomfortable. Especially if you were training every day.

If you've trained yourself to read books regularly, and then stopped for a while, you feel as if you're missing something important.

If you've decided to stop watching television altogether, you quickly get used to it. Then, accidentally, or during holidays, you catch a glimpse, and before you know it, a couple of hours pass, and you feel uncomfortable as if you're doing something out of the ordinary.

The comfort zone simply shifts. Homeostasis is rather silly; it doesn’t care what state it maintains. If it's comfortable to lie on the sofa, it will do everything to keep you there. If it's comfortable to do 100 push-ups every day, homeostasis will help you not to quit.

Efforts are only needed to shift the comfort zone. Of course, it's better and easier to do this gradually, without jumping from the sofa straight to Everest—you won’t have enough willpower to overcome the threshold. Willpower should be conserved; there’s not much of it, and it's not capable of handling big jumps.

In the case of the Goat, everything is easier because to shift the comfort zone, the only requirement is its own, goat-like willpower. Others just need to comply and trudgingly follow wherever this horned and bearded creature leaps. For employees, the comfort zone shifts for free, without the costs of self-motivation, goal-setting, or persuading oneself. The entire burden of overcoming the threshold of homeostasis falls on the goat's shoulders.

Unfortunately, the nice manager resembles a spineless rag more. He values his own homeostasis above all, sacrificing every employee's opportunity for development. Although he has a solid excuse: those who want to develop will do so on their own. Yet, it’s unclear what his role is then.

Yes, finally, let me say—don’t confuse Goats with Idiots. A Goat pushes with goals, tasks, and plans. An Idiot just pushes. Screams, humiliates, induces guilt, sets you up, offends. Essentially, they assert themselves at your expense, in short.

A goat can also behave like a fool when it's still young. Little goat. With experience, this passes. But even a little goat will set a goal for you. A fool will simply mess up your mind and, happy, will move on to the next victim.

Find yourself a goat. Love the goat. Become a goat yourself.

Source: habr.com

Как тебе твой начальник?
