Moreover, upon closer examination, a modern office network that allows for almost all typical office tasks can be built cheaper and faster than commonly believed, while its architecture becomes simpler and more scalable. Don\u2019t believe it? Let\u2019s try to figure it out, starting with what is considered the proper way to lay out a network. <br \/>\n <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h3>What is a structured cabling system (SCS)?<\/h3>\n<p>\nAny structured cabling system (SCS), as a final element of engineering infrastructure, is implemented in several stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>design;<\/li>\n<li>the actual installation of the cabling infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li>installation of access points;<\/li>\n<li>installation of switching points;<\/li>\n<li>commissioning works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Design <\/h3>\n<p>\nAny large endeavor, if you want to do it well, begins with preparation. For SCS, this preparation is design. At this stage, it is taken into account how many workstations need to be supported, how many ports must be placed, and what capacity potential should be laid out. At this stage, one must follow standards (ISO\/IEC 11801, EN 50173, ANSI\/TIA\/EIA-568-A). In fact, it is at this stage that the boundary capabilities of the created network are determined.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/cddcf41b5ee0d53b833e952011a12c37.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n <\/p>\n<h3>Cabling infrastructure<\/h3>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c13bdbfb62325c1e444a431125921058.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/b8a053f82fc4ce9e4878d9a87f9b5107.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nAt this stage, all cable trunking that ensures data transmission within the local network is laid. Kilometers of copper cabling with twisted pairs. Hundreds of kilograms of copper. The need for the installation of cable trays and ducts \u2014 without them, the construction of a structured cabling system is impossible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/48756a3014034db14df51fa89a8ae3dc.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3>Access points<\/h3>\n<p>\nTo provide workspaces with network access, access points are laid out. Guided by the principle of redundancy (one of the most important in SCS construction), such points are laid out in numbers exceeding the minimally necessary amount. Similar to an electrical network: the more outlets there are, the more flexibly the space can be utilized where that network is located.<\/p>\n<h3>Switching points, commissioning<\/h3>\n<p>\nNext, the main and, as an option, intermediate switching points are installed. Racks\/telecom cabinets are placed, cables and ports are labeled, connections are made inside the consolidation points and in the cross-connect node. A switching journal is created, which will be updated throughout the lifespan of the cabling system.<\/p>\n<p>Once all installation stages are completed, the entire system is tested. Cables are connected to active network equipment, and the network is brought up. Compliance with the declared bandwidth (data transfer speed) for this structured cabling system is checked, the designed access points are tested, and all other parameters essential for the functioning of the structured cabling system are verified. All identified shortcomings are addressed. Only after this is the network handed over to the client.<\/p>\n<p>The physical environment for data transmission is ready. What comes next?<\/p>\n<h3>What 'lives' in the structured cabling system?<\/h3>\n<p>\nPreviously, various systems transmitted data over the local network's cabling infrastructure, locked to their own technologies and protocols. But the technology zoo has long been reduced to nothing. Now, perhaps only Ethernet remains in the 'local area network'. Telephony, video from surveillance cameras, fire alarms, security systems, utility meter data, access control systems, and 'smart intercoms' \u2013 all of this now runs over Ethernet. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/6ff497f60882b72291a35cfaeaaa24c4.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n <br \/>\n<i>Smart intercom, access control system, and remote monitoring device <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.nag.ru\/catalog\/00007.Avtomatizatsiya-i-monitoring-\/20594.Telemetriya-sfera-ZHKH-ERD-Project\/24382.SNR-ERD-PROject-2\">SNR-ERD-PROject-2<\/a><\/noindex><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Optimizing the infrastructure<\/h2>\n<p>\nAnd the question arises: with the continuous development of technology, do we still need all parts of the traditional structured cabling system?<\/p>\n<h3>Hardware and software switching<\/h3>\n<p>\nIt is time to acknowledge an obvious fact: hardware switching at the level of cross-connects and patch cords has become obsolete. Everything is now done with VLAN ports, and administrators sorting through wires in cabinets for any changes in the network structure are an anachronism. It's time to take the next step and simply abandon cross-connects and patch cords. <\/p>\n<p>And while it may seem minor, when you think about it, the benefits of this step will outweigh the transition to the next category of cable. Just consider: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The quality of the physical transmission medium will improve.<\/li>\n<li>Reliability will increase, as we are removing two mechanical contacts from three in the system (!). <\/li>\n<li>As a result, the signal transmission range will increase. It's not crucial, but still. <\/li>\n<li>Space will suddenly free up in the cabinets. And, by the way, there will be much more order there. That's already a cost saving.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of the removed equipment is low, but considering the scale of optimization, a decent amount can also be saved.<\/li>\n<li>If there is no cross-connect breaking, client lines can be terminated directly under RJ-45. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nSo what do we have? We simplified the network, made it cheaper, and at the same time, it became less glitchy and more manageable. It's all positive!<\/p>\n<p>Maybe then we should throw out something else? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h3>Fiber optics instead of copper wires<\/h3>\n<p>\nWhy do we need kilometers of twisted pair when the entire volume of information that goes through thick bundles of copper wires can easily be transmitted via fiber optics? Let's install an 8-port switch with optical uplink and, for example, PoE support in the office. From the cabinet to the office\u2014one fiber optic line. From the switch to the clients\u2014copper cabling. Meanwhile, IP phones or surveillance cameras can be powered right away. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/6d6c49bdba77b05e88f942460818884c.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThis way, not only a significant amount of copper cable in nice mesh trays is removed, but also the funds needed for laying all this traditional splendor for structured cabling systems are saved. <\/p>\n<p>However, this scheme somewhat contradicts the idea of \"correct\" equipment placement in one place, and the savings on cable and multi-port switches with copper ports will go towards purchasing small switches with PoE and optical uplinks.<\/p>\n<h3>On the client side<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe cable on the client side appeared back when wireless technologies looked more like toys than real working tools. Modern \"wireless\" easily provides speeds no less than those currently offered by cables, but allows for disconnecting the computer from a fixed connection. Yes, the airwaves are not elastic, and you can't endlessly fill them with channels, but, on the one hand, the distance from the client to the access point can be quite short (office needs allow for this), and, on the other hand, there are already new-type technologies that use, for example, optical radiation (such as the so-called Li-Fi). <\/p>\n<p>For distance requirements within 5-10 meters, sufficient for connecting 2-5 users, the access point can easily support a gigabit channel, be quite affordable, and be completely reliable. This will eliminate the need for cables for the end user.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/b6366f8006bf399d5596b053db018906.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\nOptical switch S<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.nag.ru\/catalog\/00001.Kommutatory\/33630.Kommutatory-GigabitEthernet\/29499.SNR-S2995G-48FX\">NR-S2995G-48FX<\/a><\/noindex> and a gigabit wireless router, connected with an optical patch cable<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, such a capability will be provided by devices operating in the millimeter range (802.11ad\/ay), but for now, even with lower speeds that are still sufficient for office workers, this can be achieved based on the 802.11ac standard. <\/p>\n<p>However, in this case, the approach to connecting devices such as IP phones or video cameras changes. Firstly, they will require separate power through a power supply. Secondly, these devices must support operation with Wi-Fi. Nonetheless, there is nothing stopping us from initially leaving a few copper ports on the access point. At least for backward compatibility or unforeseen needs. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/31d9cf11d0b7ef6c6928cec6c062d067.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\nAs an example, the wireless router <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.nag.ru\/catalog\/00009.Besprovodnoe-oborudovanie\/33707.Wi-Fi-marshrutizatory-SOHO\/32094.SNR-CPE-ME2-SFP\">SNR-CPE-ME2-SFP<\/a><\/noindex>, 802.11a\/b\/g\/n, 802.11ac Wave 2, 4xGE RJ45, 1xSFP<\/p>\n<h3> The next step is logical, right? <\/h3>\n<p>\nLet's not stop at what we have achieved. We will connect access points with an optical fiber cable with a bandwidth of, say, 10 gigabits. And forget about traditional structured cabling systems like a bad dream.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme becomes simple and elegant. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ideal local network\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/7c316af99dfbfc2318f365a615b358da.jpeg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nInstead of cluttered cabinets and trays filled with copper cable, we install a small cabinet containing a switch with optical 'tens' for every 4-8 users and pull fiber optics to the access points.
