Related source texts for the new release are hosted in <noindex>Git repository</noindex> the project (branch android-10.0.0_r1). Firmware updates have already <noindex>are prepared</noindex> been rolled out for 8 Pixel series devices, including the first Pixel model. Additionally, <noindex>are created</noindex> universal GSI (Generic System Images) builds suitable for various devices based on ARM64 and x86_64 architectures. In the coming months, updates with Android 10 will be released for current smartphones from companies like Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, Huawei, Nokia, Vivo, OPPO, OnePlus, ASUS, LG, and Essential.

<noindex>Key</noindex> new features:

 Project <noindex>Mainline</noindex>, allowing the update of individual system components without a complete platform update. Such updates are downloaded via Google Play separately from the manufacturer's OTA firmware updates. It is expected that direct delivery of hardware-agnostic platform component updates will significantly reduce the time for receiving updates, improve the responsiveness of vulnerability fixes, and decrease dependence on device manufacturers in maintaining platform security. Modules with updates will initially be provided with open-source code, will be immediately available in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) repositories, and may include improvements and fixes prepared by third-party contributors.

Among the components that will be updated separately are: multimedia codecs, multimedia framework, DNS resolver, <noindex>Conscrypt</noindex> Java Security Provider, Documents UI, Permission Controller, ExtServices, timezone data, <noindex>ANGLE</noindex> (a layer for translating OpenGL ES calls into OpenGL, Direct3D 9/11, Desktop GL, and Vulkan), Module Metadata, network components, Captive Portal Login, and network access settings. System component updates are delivered in a new package format <noindex>APEX</noindex>, which differs from APK in its ability to be applied at an early stage of the system boot. A rollback mode is provided in case of possible failures;

At the system level, a <noindex>dark theme</noindex> is implemented, which can be applied to reduce eye strain in low light conditions.
The dark theme can be enabled in the settings under Settings > Display, through the quick settings drop-down menu, or when the power-saving mode is activated. The dark theme applies to both the system and applications, including offering an automatic conversion mode for existing themes into dark tones.

<noindex></noindex>

The system of automated quick responses, previously available for notifications, can now be used to generate recommendations for the most likely actions in any application. For example, when displaying a message inviting to a meeting, the system will suggest quick responses to accept or decline the invitation, as well as show a button to view the scheduled meeting location on the map. The options are selected using a machine learning system based on studying user behavior;

<noindex></noindex>

More tools have been provided to control applications' access to the user's location information. Previously, if the appropriate permissions were granted, an application could access the location at any time, even when it was inactive (running in the background), but in the new release, the user can permit location information to be accessed only during an active session with the application;

<noindex></noindex>

A parental control mode called 'Family Link' has been added, which allows limiting children's screen time, providing bonus minutes for achievements, viewing lists of apps being used, and monitoring how much time a child spends on them, reviewing installed apps, and setting nighttime hours to block access at night.

<noindex></noindex>

A 'Focus Mode' has been introduced, enabling users to selectively mute distracting apps for a period when focus is needed on a specific task, such as pausing incoming emails and news while keeping maps and messaging apps operational. This feature is currently inactive in the builds.

A gesture navigation mode has been added, allowing control through screen gestures only, without displaying the navigation bar, maximizing screen space for content. For example, buttons like Back and Home are replaced with a swipe from the edge and a swipe gesture from the bottom up, while accessing the list of running apps requires a long press on the screen. This mode can be activated in the 'Settings > System > Gestures'.

The 'Live Caption' feature has been added, enabling automatic real-time caption creation while watching any video or listening to audio recordings, regardless of the app being used. Speech recognition occurs locally without relying on external services. This feature is currently inactive in the builds.

The concept of "bubbles" has been added for organizing simultaneous work with multiple applications. Bubbles allow actions to be performed in other applications without leaving the current program. Additionally, bubbles enable quick access to the functionality of a specific application while performing various tasks on the device. For example, through bubbles, users can continue conversations in a messenger via buttons displayed over content, quickly send messages, keep a task list in view, take notes, access translation services, and receive visual reminders while working in other applications. Bubbles are implemented over the notification system and allow for the use of a similar API.

<noindex></noindex>

Support for foldable screen devices has been added, such as <noindex>Huawei Mate X</noindex>. Each half of the foldable screen can now host a separate application. To support these new screen types, support for separate handling of multiple wake and focus change events has been added (when one half of the screen is active while the other remains closed, or when both halves are active), and the API has been expanded to manage screen size changes (so that the application correctly recognizes an increase in screen size upon opening the second half). The Android emulator has been updated to simulate foldable screen devices;

<noindex></noindex>

Support for Sharing Shortcuts has been added, allowing quick access to the application that performs the sending.

<noindex></noindex>

Support for settings panels has been added, enabling access to key system settings in the context of the user application. An API is provided for displaying the settings panels from the application. <noindex>Settings Panel</noindex>. For example, a multimedia player can display a panel with system audio settings, while a browser can show the network connection settings and the flight mode toggle.

<noindex></noindex>

Security:

<noindex>Additional</noindex> Additional access restrictions for applications to shared files, such as photo, video, and music collections.

To access downloaded files located in the Downloads folder, the application must now use the system file chooser dialog, giving the user full control over which specific files the application can access.

The ability for applications to transition from background execution to active state by coming to the foreground and obtaining input focus has been blocked, thus interrupting the user's work with another application. If a background application needs to attract the user's attention, such as during an incoming call, it should now use high-priority notifications with authorization for fullscreen output.

<noindex>Access is restricted</noindex> to immutable device identifiers, such as IMEI and serial number. To obtain such identifiers, the application must have READ_PRIVILEGED_PHONE_STATE privileges.
Applications are also restricted from accessing the pseudo-FS "/proc/net" with network activity statistics, and access to clipboard data is now provided only when the application is active (has focus);

When providing a list of contacts to the application, the ranking of output by frequency of contact access has been stopped to conceal user preference information from applications.

MAC address randomization is enabled by default: when connecting to different wireless networks, different MAC addresses are now generated, preventing tracking of user movement between WiFi networks.

To access the API for scanning Bluetooth networks, cellular networks, and Wi-Fi, permissions for obtaining precise location information are now required (previously, permissions for approximate location information were sufficient). However, if a connection is established in P2P mode or the network to connect to is identified by the system, separate permissions to access location information are not required;

Support for wireless network protection technology has been implemented <noindex>WPA3</noindex>, which provides protection against password guessing attacks (preventing offline password cracking) and uses the SAE authentication protocol. For generating encryption keys in open networks, support for a connection negotiation process implemented by the OWE extension has been added (<noindex>Opportunistic Wireless Encryption</noindex>);

<noindex>Added</noindex> ) and support for <noindex>TLS 1.3</noindex>. In Google's tests, using TLS 1.3 can accelerate the establishment of secure connections by up to 40% compared to TLS 1.2.

 A new storage has been introduced <noindex>Scoped Storage</noindex>, providing a level of isolation for application files. Using this API, an application can create a separate isolated directory for its files on external storage (e.g., an SD card), which other applications will not be able to access. The current application will be limited to this directory for storing photos, videos, and music, and will not overlap with common multimedia collections. To gain access to shared file collections, separate permissions will be required;

In the API <noindex>BiometricPrompt</noindex>, unifying the output of the biometric authentication dialog, support for passive authentication methods, such as facial recognition, has been added. Separate processing methods for explicit and implicit authentication have been proposed. In explicit authentication, the user must confirm the operation, whereas in implicit authentication, authentication can occur seamlessly in passive mode;

Wireless stack.

Support for the mobile communication standard <noindex>5G</noindex>, for which existing connection management APIs have been adapted. This includes the ability of applications to determine the presence of a high-speed connection and the activity of traffic billing through the APIs;

Two modes of Wi-Fi operation have been added — a mode for achieving maximum throughput and a mode for minimal latency (for instance, useful for gaming and voice communications);

The wireless stack has been refactored to enhance privacy and increase performance, as well as to improve the management of Internet of Things devices over local Wi-Fi (for instance, for Wi-Fi printing) and point selection. The scanning of available access points is now provided by the platform, displaying found networks in the Wi-Fi Picker interface and automatically configuring connections if chosen by the user. Applications can influence the selection algorithm of preferred wireless networks through the WifiNetworkSuggestions API by passing a ranked list of networks and passwords for connecting to them. Moreover, when selecting a network for connection, metrics on the bandwidth of previous connections are now taken into account (the fastest network is chosen);

Multimedia and Graphics

Support for a graphic API has been added <noindex>Vulkan 1.1</noindex>. Compared to OpenGL ES, using Vulkan can significantly reduce CPU load (up to 10 times in Google tests) and improve rendering performance. The ultimate goal is to achieve widespread support for Vulkan across all Android devices, for which Google is working with hardware manufacturers to make Vulkan 1.1 a mandatory requirement for all 64-bit devices running Android 10;

Experimental support for executing a layer has been added <noindex>ANGLE</noindex> (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) on top of the Vulkan graphic API. ANGLE allows rendering while abstracting away from system-specific APIs by translating OpenGL ES calls into OpenGL, Direct3D 9/11, Desktop GL, and Vulkan. For game developers and graphics application developers, ANGLE <noindex>, rather than taking focus.</noindex> allows the use of a standard OpenGL ES driver on all devices that utilize Vulkan;

Applications for working with the camera and images can now request the camera to transmit additional XMP metadata in the JPEG file, including information required for depth processing in photographs (for example, a depth map saved by dual cameras). These parameters can be applied to implement various background blurring modes and effects <noindex>bokeh</noindex>, as well as to create 3D photographs or in augmented reality systems;

Support for the video codec <noindex>AV1</noindex>, which is positioned as a public and royalty-free video encoding format that significantly outperforms H.264 and VP9 in compression level;

Support for the free audio codec <noindex>Opus</noindex>, providing high-quality encoding and minimal latency for both high-bitrate streaming audio compression and voice compression in bandwidth-limited VoIP telephony applications;

Support for the standard <noindex>HDR10+</noindex>, used for encoding video with an extended dynamic range;

A simplified method has been added to the MediaCodecInfo API for determining the available video output capabilities on the device (a list of codecs and supported resolutions and FPS on the device is displayed);

Added API <noindex>Native MIDI</noindex>, allowing C++ applications to directly interact with MIDI devices through the NDK in a non-blocking mode that enables processing MIDI messages with very low latency;

A MicrophoneDirection API has been added to control sound capture from directional microphones. This API allows specifying the direction for microphone orientation when recording audio. For example, when creating a selfie video, one can set setMicrophoneDirection( MIC_DIRECTION_FRONT) to record from the microphone on the front of the device. This API can also control microphones with changeable coverage (zoomable), specifying the size of the recording area.

A new API for audio capture has been added, allowing one application
to provide audio stream processing capabilities to another application. Granting other applications access to audio output requires a special permission;

The system and advanced APIs.

Significant performance optimizations have been made to the runtime ART, resulting in reduced memory consumption and faster application startup. Profiles are being distributed via Google Play.
PGO (Profile Guided Optimization), which includes information about the most frequently executed parts of the code. Precompiling such parts significantly reduces startup time. Optimizations have been made within ART for earlier application process startup and relocation to an isolated container. Additional data, such as classes, is preserved in the application’s memory image. A multithreaded loading mode for application memory images has been implemented. Garbage collector efficiency has been improved through the separate processing of recently created objects.

<noindex></noindex>

The API has been updated to version 1.2. <noindex>Neural Networks</noindex>, providing applications with the ability to leverage hardware acceleration for machine learning systems. The API is positioned as a foundational layer for functioning within Android machine learning frameworks such as <noindex>TensorFlow Lite</noindex> and Caffe2. A range of pre-trained neural network models has been proposed for mobile devices, including <noindex>MobileNets</noindex> (object recognition in photos), <noindex>Inception v3</noindex> (computer vision) and Smart
Reply (suggesting responses to messages). The new release includes 60 new operations, such as ARGMAX, ARGMIN, and quantized LSTM, along with significant performance optimizations, enabling the API to support new machine learning models, such as object detection and image segmentation.

The SDK has added a new emulator for devices with folding screens, available in the release of <noindex>Android Studio 3.5</noindex> as an additional virtual device, presented in options with 7.3 (4.6) and 8 (6.6) inch screens. The platform for foldable devices has extended onResume and onPause handlers, adding support for independently disabling multiple screens, as well as implementing enhanced notifications when the application gains focus.

<noindex></noindex>

The Thermal API has been added, allowing applications to monitor CPU and GPU temperature readings and take measures to reduce workload independently (for example, lowering FPS in games and reducing the resolution of streamed videos) without waiting for the system to forcefully limit application activity.

<noindex></noindex>

Source: opennet.ru
