Nearly ten years have passed since the last significant release. the<\/a><\/noindex> platform release Mumble 1.3<\/a><\/noindex>, focused on creating voice chats that provide low latency and high voice transmission quality. A key area of application for Mumble is facilitating communication among players during gameplay. The project's code is written in C++ and is distributed<\/a><\/noindex> is licensed under BSD. Builds are prepared<\/a><\/noindex> are available for Linux, Windows, and macOS.<\/p>\n

The project consists of two modules \u2014 the mumble client and the murmur server.
\nThe graphical interface is based on Qt. Audio information is transmitted using an audio codec Opus<\/a><\/noindex>. It offers a flexible access control system, allowing for the creation of voice chats for several isolated groups while providing the opportunity for
\nleaders to communicate across all groups. Data is transmitted only over an encrypted communication channel, with public key authentication applied by default.<\/p>\n

Unlike centralized services, Mumble allows users to keep their data on their own hardware and have complete control over the server's operation, with the ability to connect additional scripts for which a special API based on Ice and gRPC protocols is available. Existing user databases can be used for authentication, or sound bots can be connected, which can, for example, play music. Server management is possible through a web interface. Users have access to features for finding friends on different servers.<\/p>\n

Additional applications include recording collaborative podcasts and providing positional live sound in games (where the sound source is linked to the player and emanates from their location in the game space), including games with hundreds of participants (for example, Mumble is used in player communities for Eve Online and Team Fortress 2). An overlay mode is also supported in games, allowing the user to see which player they are talking to and check the FPS and local time.<\/p>\n
