Eclipse Community has introduced<\/a><\/noindex> the platform Jakarta EE 8<\/a><\/noindex>, which replaces Java EE (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) after transferring the processes of specification development, TCK, and reference implementation to the non-profit organization Eclipse Foundation. Jakarta EE 8 offers the same set of specifications and TCK tests as Java EE 8. The differences are limited to the name change and the transition to new specification development processes. The platform was released under a new name as Oracle only transferred the technologies and project management but did not grant the Eclipse community rights to use the Java trademark. The overall project for the development of Jakarta EE was named EE4J (Eclipse Enterprise for Java).<\/p>\n

The release signals the completion of establishing the infrastructure and processes for the development of specifications for the enterprise Java platform in a neutral environment, independent of specific vendors, and allowing for transparent and open decision-making, development, and certification processes. For certifying products compatible with Jakarta EE, compatibility assessment kits (TCK) are provided under the Eclipse TCK license.<\/p>\n

Jakarta EE 8 is a starting point for creating new specifications, which various vendors will participate in preparing. Plans for further expanding the specifications include the development of tools for business applications for cloud computing (Cloud Native<\/a><\/noindex>). Changes prepared during the collaborative work will be proposed in the next release, Jakarta EE 9, which will feature specifications for Jakarta NoSQL and changes in the namespace. <\/p>\n

Jakarta NoSQL will define standard high-level interfaces for Java applications to interact with NoSQL databases, representing a significant step in preparing the Java platform for utilizing the Cloud Native paradigm. The framework JNoSQL<\/a><\/noindex>will be used as the reference implementation of Jakarta NoSQL. Changes in the namespace are related to the inability to use the names java and javax in the new Jakarta EE functionality, therefore is planned<\/a><\/noindex> transition to the new namespace «jakarta.*»<\/p>\n

Regarding decision-making, the new process Jakarta EE Specification Process<\/a><\/noindex> (JESP), which will be used by the Jakarta EE Working Group to advance Jakarta EE. JESP is based on the open principles of the Eclipse Foundation Specification Process (EFSP) accepted by the community. Approval from an absolute majority of the strategic members of the working group is required to approve any changes to the Jakarta EE specifications or to form a new version, in addition to any other voting regulations defined in the EFSP.<\/p>\n
