In 2017, Sony released a very unusual, interesting, high-featured, and extremely expensive camera, the RX0. It attracted attention due to its incredible functionality in a compact size, while technically resembling the then-popular compact camera from the famous Sony RX100 series. Externally, the RX0 looked like a typical action camera: it was waterproof, resistant to drops, and could withstand the weight of a person without damage. However, Sony initially emphasized that this device could be anything but an action camera. The joke is that, in that capacity, the RX0 didn't perform in the best way, to put it mildly. Now, almost two years later, a similar next-gen camera is released\u2014the Sony RX0 II, which seems like a slight, purely cosmetic update.<\/p>\n

Among the main innovations is a new foldable screen and the ability to record 4K video using the camera itself, without the need for an external recorder. The potential uses of the new camera now include recording videos for vlogs and slow-motion shooting. The manufacturer is again reluctant to label the RX0 II as an action camera, but once again, this does not deter internet users from comparing it to GoPro and DJI. Previously, this comparison was clearly not in Sony's favor, but a lot could have changed in the past two years.<\/p>\n

It's easy to believe that the RX0 II really doesn't intend to compete with the mentioned GoPro and DJI. Just look at Sony's range of true action cameras, specifically the FDR-X3000 and HDR-AS300 models. The new RX0 doesn't fit into this lineup at all, and it's unlikely that the company would allow internal competition in any form. So, what we have here is truly a camera for everyday shooting: very small, very durable, and very unusual, therefore intriguing.<\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Design and ergonomics<\/h2>\n

The RX0 II looks very stylish. By God, if camera manufacturers devoted as much attention to design as Sony has in this case, we would live in a much more beautiful world. I exaggerate, of course, but from an aesthetic standpoint, the camera is very attractive\u2014it feels good to hold, looks interesting in action, and has a very pleasant tactile quality.<\/p>\n

The main innovation \u2013 the flip screen \u2013 has led to a noticeable increase in the thickness of the body. While the design has hardly changed, the Sony RX0 II, now 5 millimeters thicker, feels slightly different in hand. The screen remains compact, as do all the mechanical buttons around it, but now you can press them from different angles. This may sound silly, but working with this confusing interface has become a little easier.<\/p>\n

The camera body is made from a single piece of aluminum with necessary cutouts for buttons and \"technical compartments\". One of these compartments is located on the right edge \u2013 under a thick aluminum cover with a rubber seal, housing the battery. The second is located at the back, to the left of the screen, concealing all communication ports (microUSB, microHDMI, mini-jack) and the memory card slot. It's worth noting that the camera is quite demanding on the speed of memory cards and isn't shy about cutting some features. For instance, 4K video recording and high frame rate capture.<\/p>\n

Additionally, it makes the camera easier to hold in hand, which is particularly critical when working underwater without gloves. The Sony RX0 II body has an IPX8 protection degree, making it completely dust and waterproof, capable of withstanding submersion to a depth of 10 meters without any additional accessories. For enhanced protection, a special case is available for purchase that allows operation at depths of up to 100 meters.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the camera body is resistant to falls from up to two meters \u2013 I have dropped the camera several times onto different surfaces from my height without any consequences. The body may slightly scratch if thrown on concrete or pavement, but a fall onto a wooden floor or lawn from a greater height poses no threat whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Before encountering the Sony RX0 II, I had never dealt with rugged cameras featuring flip screens. All underwater or pseudo-underwater devices typically had fixed displays, as this makes waterproofing much simpler. Therefore, this aspect raised some concerns. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to test its performance at a depth of 10 meters, but during the review preparation, the camera was in a children's pool, the bathtub, and even the washing machine (without a spin) \u2014 and nothing happened to it at all. Thus, it certainly deserves the highest marks for protection and build quality. However, it does have some obvious and possibly insurmountable ergonomic issues \u2014 particularly concerning the screen, the buttons around it, and the interface itself.<\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Display and Interface<\/h2>\n

As you may have already gathered, the Sony RX0 II is overall a very ambiguous device, but if we break it down, the most controversial element is definitely the screen. Firstly, it is very small \u2014 it can be difficult to assess exposure settings correctly, not to mention focusing accuracy. Although it doesn't have significant issues with either, this fact is very important for professional use.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the 1.5-inch screen displays almost the same menu as the RX100 compact series and the full-frame Alpha A7 mirrorless cameras. The menu itself is fine; it has long been familiar and clear \u2014 professional Sony cameras have gained popularity in recent years, so a unified menu style is quite logical. The issue is that the small screen can't hold much information, horizontal scrolling becomes almost endless, and there are no dial selectors for quicker navigation. Switching individual settings between takes turns into a real nightmare, especially if you have to do it on the go.<\/p>\n
