Such questions work in the short term because after a couple of months, what's important for them is not the quality of the equipment, but the team atmosphere, the number of meetings, and the enthusiasm to improve the code.

Below is a list of topics that will highlight problem areas that are not often mentioned.
<noindex></noindex>
Disclaimer:
There is no point in asking the HR questions below due to a conflict of interest.

About the work week

Ask about grooming, daily meetings, and other Agile ceremonies. While answering, observe the emotions your interviewee is experiencing, how they tell their story, and pay attention to their facial expressions. Do you see enthusiasm or fatigue? Are their answers lively, or do they sound like a retelling of a boring school book?
Ask yourself, if your close one inquires about the new job in a month, would you want to share the same way?

About the frequency of fires

At my last job, fires occurred at least once a week. Fires are masters at manipulating personal time. Every time, the culprit stays late in the office to find and fix the bug. The team will be left with an unpleasant impression if you want to leave for an errand while the company is paying clients compensation for every hour of unresolved bugs.

Fires need to be extinguished, but the team can get so used to it that refusal will be perceived as desertion.

About conferences during working hours

Although I was allowed to attend conferences at every job, I know speakers who were only allowed if they worked additional hours on weekends. No one cared that they brought value through technical PR for the company. Even if you don't like conferences, the answer will show your future boundaries of freedom.

As a bonus, you will learn to speak, prepare presentations, and immerse yourself in the community if there are people in the company who enjoy participating in conferences.

I was thrilled when my flights, tickets, as well as expenses for housing and food were covered. If I were a speaker, there would be an additional bonus of $2,000.

About strict deadlines

Like fires, this question is an indicator of burnout speed within teams.

Find out how often you will be asked to urgently complete a task in n days. Such teams tend to believe the myth that testing slows down development, and this dirty class will be fixed next week.

A professional refuses to compromise the principles of quality coding. Every request to write a feature faster or to try harder implies that you're being hinted to produce lower-quality code or to operate outside your efficiency. When you agree, you show a willingness to violate professional standards and admit to not working at full capacity until you're asked to 'try harder' again.

Uncle Bob wrote about this. <noindex>a book</noindex>.

Now let's move on to my favorite question. Use it if you don't have time to ask the interviewee for details.

On the pros and cons.

The question may seem obvious and even silly, but you have no idea how much it helps shape the final impression of future work.

I started with this question when I was interviewed by three developers. They hesitated and initially answered that there weren't any significant downsides, everything seemed fine.
— Then what about the positives?
They exchanged glances and pondered.
— Well, they provide MacBooks.
— The view is nice, it is the 30th floor after all.

That says a lot. None of them mentioned the project, hundreds of microservices, or the great development team.
But there is the 30th floor and MacBooks, yes.

When a person doesn't recall the negatives, they are either lying or indifferent. This happens when downsides become mundane, like herring under a fur coat during New Year.

Since this is very similar to burnout, I asked about overtime.
They exchanged glances again with a slight smirk. One jokingly replied that they've had overtime since 2016. Since he mentioned it casually, another immediately corrected him, stating that all overtime is well compensated, and a bonus was paid to everyone at the end of the year.

Frequent overtime leads to burnout. Initially, interest in the project and team decreases, followed by disinterest in programming. Don’t sell your motivation for a multiplier on your salary and work on weekends and late hours.

Output

Discuss uncomfortable topics in detail during every interview. What was once a formality will save you months.

I support interviewers who dismiss candidates without questions. Questions are like a time machine that transports one into the future. Only the lazy wouldn't want to know if they will enjoy the work.

I've had instances where the answers to these and other questions would lead to conversations lasting an hour and a half to two hours. They helped create a detailed picture and saved months, if not years, of work.

This recipe is not a panacea. The depth and number of questions largely depend on the company's field. In custom development, more time should be spent on deadlines, while in product development, on urgent issues. Some critical details will only come to light months later, but these topics help uncover major problems when everything seems fine on the surface.

Thanks for the wonderful illustrations
