Developers of the Mir display server and the MATE desktop combined<\/a><\/noindex> are working on porting MATE applications for use in Wayland-based environments. A demonstration snap package has already been prepared. mate-wayland<\/a><\/noindex> with a MATE environment based on Wayland, but significant work remains to make it ready for everyday use, mainly related to porting final applications to Wayland.<\/p>\n

The problem is that many MATE applications rely on X11-specific functionality, and they need to be reworked to use fully portable GTK3 code. Given the large number of applications and the substantial codebase, this effort requires considerable resources. To attract interested enthusiasts to the porting process, the Mir developers have prepared guide<\/a><\/noindex>, which explains how to set up the MATE environment on Wayland and what code aspects to pay attention to. The guide also offers typical solutions for replacing various X11 bindings.<\/p>\n
