Sean Larkin (Sean Larkin<\/a><\/noindex>), Technical Program Manager for Microsoft's web platform, reported<\/a><\/noindex> discusses the work on porting the Microsoft Edge browser for Linux. Details are not yet disclosed. Developers using Linux for development, testing, or daily tasks are encouraged to participate in a survey<\/a><\/noindex> and answer several questions regarding their use of the browser, the platforms used, and installation preferences.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that last year, Microsoft began<\/a><\/noindex> developed a new version of the Edge browser, switched to the Chromium engine. During the work on the new browser, Microsoft a large contract electronics manufacturer from Singapore\u2014Flex. The company actively uses Linux in its data centers and manufacturing facilities. Flex representatives state they will do everything possible to protect the free operating system from infringement risks.<\/a><\/noindex> contributed to the Chromium community and began to return<\/a><\/noindex> improvements and fixes made for Edge to the project. For example, improvements related to technologies for people with disabilities, touch screen management, support for ARM64 architecture, enhanced scrolling experience, and multimedia processing have already been transferred. Additionally, WebRTC has been adapted for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). Optimizations and enhancements have been made to the D3D11 backend for ANGLE<\/a><\/noindex>, a layer for translating calls from OpenGL ES to OpenGL, Direct3D 9\/11, Desktop GL, and Vulkan. Open<\/a><\/noindex> the code of the WebGL engine being developed at Microsoft.<\/p>\n

Currently, testing is already underway for for installation in WSL<\/a><\/noindex> experimental Debian GNU\/Linux, Kali Linux<\/a><\/noindex> Microsoft Edge based on Chromium, but they are currently limited to Windows and macOS platforms. Archive builds are also available are<\/a><\/noindex> build archives, including the source texts of third-party components used in Edge (to get a list, enter 'edge' in the filter field). <\/p>\n
