Good day! This article addresses the issue of counterfeit sensors, the limitations of existing devices using these sensors, and a solution to this problem.<\/p>\n

There have been previous writings about counterfeit sensors before me, here<\/a><\/noindex>. Distinctive differences between counterfeit sensors and originals include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The sensor, even when connected in close proximity, responds hesitantly in parasitic power mode, intermittently.<\/li>\n
  2. In parasitic power mode, the high level is restored too slowly (can be measured with a microcontroller or can be seen on an oscilloscope).<\/li>\n
  3. Current consumption is significantly higher than a few microamperes (GND and VCC are negative, DQ is connected through a microammeter to +5 volts).<\/li>\n
  4. After the enumeration procedure (0xF0), sensors do not respond to the read scratchpad command (0xBE).<\/li>\n
  5. The temperature read from the scratchpad after power is supplied without a measurement command differs from 85.0 degrees.<\/li>\n
  6. Values in the scratchpad at positions 5 and 7 do not correspond to 0xFF and 0x10.<\/li>\n
  7. Temperature values (at the first two positions of the scratchpad) read after the first power-up of the depowered sensor without a prior measurement command return the previous value instead of 50 05 (85.0 degrees).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \nUnfortunately, I do not have an oscilloscope, and the testing platform was the GPS tracker Galileosky BaseBlock Lite. <\/p>\n

    The sensors were purchased from various sellers, and only one batch worked with parasitic power. A total of 5 batches of 50 units were purchased.
    \nThe others did not work with parasitic power at all. The terminal does not provide for external power for the sensor, and the system installation in the car needs to be simplified as much as possible.<\/p>\n

    Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n

    \nSo, the sensors were purchased, but only one batch worked correctly, and investigating and ordering a new batch would take considerable time and lead to additional expenses. Therefore, the problem had to be solved on my own.<\/p>\n

    Since only a two-wire scheme is used, it is necessary to organize power to the sensor from the signal wire, that is, to establish parasitic power. I organized parasitic power according to the following diagram:<\/p>\n

    \nIn this design, the operation of parasitic power supply has been improved, while still allowing for the option to connect external power. At the same time, the connection scheme changes slightly: when using parasitic power supply, the Vcc wire connection is modified. not used<\/u>.<\/p>\n

    After assembling the circuit using a through-hole mounting process, the sensor was detected by the terminal with a capacitor value of 1 \u00b5F. For mass deployment, panelized boards with parasitic power supply boards were designed and ordered.<\/p>\n

    \nAn interesting point is:<\/b> To seal the sensor, manufacturers might use thermal glue or silicone. In the first case, the sleeve can be heated, the sensor removed, the board inserted, returned to the sleeve, and filled with more thermal glue. In the second case, this won\u2019t work, and the board had to be soldered close to the sensor, filled with thermal glue, and heat-shrink tubing applied, resulting in this appearance:<\/p>\n

    \nHere, I would like to urge device manufacturers to consider this aspect in their products, sellers to check sensors before selling, or have no dealings with suppliers who provide counterfeit sensors, and users to shed light on this issue in comments, emails, or inquiries.
