A joint statement by the developers of the GNU project has appeared on the website planet.gnu.org.<\/p>\n

We, the undersigned maintainers and developers of GNU, must thank Richard Stallman for decades of his work in the free software movement. Stallman has constantly emphasized the importance of user freedom and laid the groundwork for making his dream a reality by starting the development of GNU. We are sincerely grateful to him for this. \nHowever, we must also acknowledge that Stallman's behavior over the years has undermined the core value of the GNU project: empowering all computer users. GNU does not fulfill its mission if the behavior of its leader alienates the majority of those we wish to reach. \nWe believe that Richard Stallman cannot solely represent the entire GNU. It is time for the GNU maintainers to collectively make a decision about the organization of the project. The GNU project we aim to build is one that everyone can trust while safeguarding their freedom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
