On October 4, 1999, Daniel Robbins registered the domain gentoo.org and began developing a new distribution that, along with Bob Mutch, attempted to incorporate some ideas from the FreeBSD project while merging them with the Linux distribution Enoch, which had been under development for about a year and involved experiments in creating a distribution compiled from source code with optimizations for specific hardware. A foundational feature of Gentoo was the distinction between source-compiled ports (portage) and the minimal base system necessary for building the distribution's core applications.
