It all began just over a year ago, in July 2018, when the first hardware device from Yandex was introduced \u2014 the YNDX-0001, the \"smart\" speaker Yandex.Station. Just when we thought we had seen it all, devices from the YNDX series, equipped with the brand's voice assistant Alice (or designed to work with it), started pouring in like a cornucopia. And now, as I prepare to test another new product, I find myself bringing home the \"full Yandex package\" \u2014 it includes the first Yandex.Station<\/a><\/noindex>, and smart home elements<\/a><\/noindex>, and devices with Alice from other Russian developers<\/a><\/noindex>. Except for Yandex.Phone<\/a><\/noindex> none. But there is something else...<\/p>\n

We have already talked about almost all of these devices. Some evoked admiration, while others garnered cautious skepticism, but it is undeniable that Yandex's branded devices have not become rare items produced in limited quantities solely for exhibitions and media handouts. Yandex does not disclose exact figures on the number of devices sold, only mentioning the total sales amount<\/a><\/noindex> \u2014 in the first half of the year, revenue from gadget sales amounted to 413 million rubles. However, they currently contribute to Yandex's loss, which totals 293 million rubles. According to estimates by the analytical company Canalys, around 100,000 units of Yandex.Station have been shipped during this time \u2014 these are unverified figures, but even if they are inflated twofold, the result is still quite good. Moreover, the price of Yandex.Station has even increased this year \u2014 from 9,990 to 10,990 rubles, but this does not hinder its popularity. According to representatives of retail chains, sales of Yandex.Station continue to grow. <\/p>\n

So what else do I have in the package and why do I recall with such detail how the story of Yandex-branded devices began? Because I am about to get acquainted with the new product \u2014 YNDX-0004, and of course, you have already guessed that this is the younger sister of the first Station \u2014 Yandex.Station Mini. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>What's in the Box<\/h2>\n

I completely understand: if I had written that the Yandex Station Mini comes in a marble box, most readers would have missed that part anyway, as they skip this section. Indeed, what could be more boring than a packaging description (believe me, it's not exciting for the author either)? But in this case, it\u2019s worth mentioning a few words about the packaging, because the designers behind it truly put in effort. The main features of the device and examples of voice commands are listed on the sides of the small cardboard box. The image of the Yandex Station Mini on the lid is complemented by an embossing that makes the side of the device in the photo feel rough to the touch, and the inner lid greets you with the inscription: \u201cMeet your Yandex Station Mini.\u201d It\u2019s a nice attention to detail. <\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

Inside the box, along with the device, users will find a compact 7.5W power adapter, a USB cable for connecting to this adapter, a fold-out booklet with instructions, and three sheets of branded stickers \u2014 the latter will be equally loved by those who enjoy decorating their laptop covers and by younger children. <\/p>\n

And there\u2019s one more thing that buyers of the Yandex Station Mini receive, but it can\u2019t be found inside the box \u2014 a 3-month free subscription to the Yandex Plus service, which is activated upon the first registration of the device. <\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Design, Features<\/h2>\n

Did I mention that the designers really put in effort? This is equally true for the appearance of the device itself. It\u2019s very pleasing that the Mini design incorporates so much continuity and features borrowed from its 'elder sister.' The cylindrical shape of the device and the notches along the perimeter of the top surface are a clear reference to the shape and appearance of the volume control on the first Yandex Station. The side panel covering the speaker (which, unfortunately, is non-removable on the Mini) is made from exactly the same material as the first model, so when two Stations are placed side by side, it\u2019s immediately clear that these are devices from the same company and series. <\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

Unlike the larger model, the Yandex.Station Mini has only one button located on its side. A short press on it disables the device\u2019s microphones at the hardware level (as the manufacturer claims, but we have no reason to doubt it, right?), while a long press switches the device's modes. You might mistake the circular button with Alice's logo at the top for a button, but no, that's just an LED indicator. By the way, the plastic strip on the side of the device, where the button and USB port are located (it\u2019s nice to see that a modern Type-C is used here), is also a nod to the design of the \u201colder sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

The Yandex.Station Mini is equipped with a four-microphone array and a single speaker, with a power output of 3 W. And while the representatives of the company especially emphasized high sound quality for the first model, this topic seems to be ignored with the Mini. Indeed, one should not expect outstanding sound quality, especially a rich sound stage with deep bass from such a tiny device. However, the sound is quite decent and definitely more interesting than that of the earlier cousins we tested \u2014 Irbis A and DEXP Smartbox. Nevertheless, compared to other Bluetooth speakers, this is more of an entry-level option.  <\/p>\n

The wired USB connection is used only for powering the device. By the way, we mistakenly expected the Mini to be portable \u2014 this speaker does not have a battery, so it must be constantly plugged into a power source. I must honestly admit that the scenario of using it in another room seems much more natural and organic to me \u2014 it would be great not to interrupt music playback while heading to the kitchen for dinner, and it\u2019s not always possible to hear Alice or shout to her from the next room. <\/p>\n

Moreover, the Yandex.Station Mini only uses wireless interfaces \u2014 Wi-Fi for internet connectivity and Bluetooth for music playback from other devices. A 3.5mm jack is also included \u2014 sound from the Mini can be routed to another audio system.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>User Experience<\/h2>\n

For those familiar with multimedia devices built on the Yandex platform featuring the voice assistant Alice, the Mini won't bring many surprises. Without an internet connection, the Yandex Station is completely helpless and useless. To activate and set up the Mini, you need to use the Yandex mobile app, in the 'Devices' section of which you can configure Wi-Fi connection settings and transfer them using a sound code. If you share my fondness for Lucas' R2D2, this simple procedure will surely entertain you. <\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

Once connected to the Internet, the Yandex Station Mini offers all the same features we know from the first model and the partner devices Irbis A and DEXP Smartbox. You can ask Alice to play music, whether it's a specific song or artist, or simply playlists to match your mood or situation. Recently, there's also been the option to ask Alice to remember the owner's voice. To do this, you'll need to repeat a few phrases after Alice. Once she's learned to recognize her owner by voice, Alice will not only call him by name but, more importantly, use only his 'likes' and 'dislikes' to create a profile of musical interests, rather than those of all household members and guests. <\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

The virtual assistant can provide almost any reference information, share news, weather, or traffic updates, remind you of something after a specified time, or suggest a recipe. Children can play with Alice in more than a dozen games, enjoy riddles, or listen to a story or a song. Ultimately, you can just chat with Alice, but I can't imagine how lonely someone must be for such interaction to be entertaining more than once \u2014 personally, I quickly grew bored of the conversation. <\/p>\n

In addition, Mini allows the use of skills — special scenarios created by both Yandex engineers and third-party developers. At the time of writing this article, all reference pages for Mini, and therefore the exact list of compatible skills, were still not available. However, by the time you read this material, that information should definitely be public. Nevertheless, it is likely that Mini will have all the same skills intended for the older Station. <\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

Finally, Yandex Station Mini can manage smart home infrastructure built on the Yandex IO platform. We discussed the devices and capabilities of the system in detail in our review of Yandex's smart home. I would like to note that I tested Mini with all available devices — light bulbs, a plug, a remote control — everything worked perfectly, and setting up the components was very straightforward. The only downside is the delay between the voice command and its execution: first, Alice processes the command (not locally, as voice recognition takes place in Yandex's data center), then some time is spent transmitting the command to the smart home server and then from the server to the executing device. The delay does not exceed a couple of seconds, but even that is enough to slightly disrupt the feeling of magic.     <\/p>\n

Speaking of magic… Yes, yes, I decided to save the most interesting part for last. If the owner of Mini did not feel like a Jedi while listening to the voice of R2D2 during setup, they will definitely feel it when controlling the Station with gestures! The device is equipped with a TOF sensor (Time Of Flight) located at the top of the case. So far, only three gestures are available. To increase the volume, you need to bring your hand to the device and start slowly raising it; to decrease it, you should lower it. And to quickly mute the sound completely, you just need to cover Mini with your palm (in bluetooth speaker mode, this gesture wasn\u2019t recognized for some reason, but company representatives assured us that this issue would be fixed by the device's announcement). Perhaps later, developers will implement some more gestures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, a simple game based on gestures is implemented \u2013 the synthesizer mode. Ask Alice: \"What sounds do you know from the synthesizer?\" \u2013 and she will name one of several dozen sounds (currently there are 33), which were created specifically for the speaker by professional electronic musicians. You can control the sounds with your hand, thus playing the speaker like a musical instrument. To make it more fun, you can layer sounds over a song and jam with it. In the future, the ability to upload your own sounds to the speaker is planned. As a demonstration of gesture control capabilities, the synthesizer mode is quite amusing, but, like chatting with Alice, is unlikely to hold serious interest more than once.  <\/p>\n

It is possible that the presence of a constantly activated TOF sensor has prevented the creators of the Yandex.Station Mini from making this device autonomous and mobile. Firstly, the instructions specify that to avoid false activations, the Mini should not be installed next to tall objects. Secondly, deciding to twist the powered-on Mini in my hands, I triggered chaotic sensor activations and volume changes \u2013 it reacted to changes in distance to walls and ceilings and got completely confused. Obviously, the same will happen if you try to move the Station to another room. In general, if you want to be like a Jedi \u2013 be calm and unhurried, like a Jedi.  <\/p>\n

\u2193<\/a><\/noindex>#<\/a><\/noindex>Conclusions<\/h2>\n

At first glance, the Yandex.Station Mini does not significantly differ from the already familiar compact speakers with Alice \u2013 Irbis A and DEXP Smartbox. However, it is more expensive \u2013 3,990 rubles compared to 3,299 rubles for the DEXP device and 3,490 rubles for Irbis (it should be noted that on Beru.ru this speaker can be purchased for 3,290 rubles, and at Citilink there is currently a special price for it \u2013 1,990 rubles). Whether a more refined design, better (subjectively, I admit) sound quality, and gesture control compensate for this difference is up to you to decide. But personally, I would definitely prefer the original device from Yandex. <\/p>\n

Sales of the Yandex Station Mini will begin on October 31. The device will be available for purchase online at Beru and Svyaznoy, as well as offline at the Yandex store. A company representative stated that the day before, anyone can receive a speaker for free by bringing any unwanted audio equipment to the Yandex store in Moscow.<\/p>\n
