The American telecommunications operator Verizon and the Japanese company NEC have just successfully completed<\/a><\/noindex> Field tests of a comprehensive monitoring system for urban environments and events using existing optical communication lines. No new global investments are required \u2014 all optical cables have long been laid in the ground by Verizon and are utilized for data transmission in its network. This is the uniqueness of the project: for the first time, the operator has engaged existing commercial optical communication lines for data collection.<\/p>\n

\"Conventional<\/p>\n

Technology tracking<\/a><\/noindex> Seismic data and temperature monitoring of optical cables have been used for about 10 years, for example, in the oil extraction industry. In the city, this technology is enticing for monitoring movement and events on the streets, as well as for overseeing the condition of urban infrastructure such as roads, tunnels, bridges, and buildings. In tests conducted by Verizon and NEC, the monitoring system, relying on AI (convolutional neural network), was able to determine traffic density, the movement vector and acceleration of individual vehicles, their weight, as well as incidents on the road (collisions and even gunshots). This information will help not only improve traffic but also assist first responders such as police, ambulances, and rescue services.<\/p>\n

The principle of operation of such a monitoring system is based on the analysis of backscatter of the optical signal (echo) in the fiber optic cable, where temperature deformations or vibrations create physical interference in the communication lines, which is corrected by optical transceivers. By capturing this information with special receivers and analyzing it with AI, specific events can be linked to each 'monitored' sector.<\/p>\n

Verizon is actively expanding its cable network. Every month, it increases its infrastructure length by approximately 1,400 miles (2,253 km). If there is demand for the street monitoring service, Verizon is ready to roll it out across the entire territory of the USA, where it operates or where it is needed.<\/p>\n
